A History of Combat and Culture spans the globe and the centuries to explore the way ideas shape the conduct of warfare. Drawing its examples from Europe, the Middle East, South Asia, East Asia, and America, John A. Lynn challenges the belief that technology has been the dominant influence on combat from ancient times to the present day. In battle, ideas can be more far more important than bullets or bombs. Clausewitz proclaimed that war is politics, but even more basically, war is culture. The hard reality of armed conflict is formed by -- and, in turn, forms -- a culture's values, assumptions, and expectations about fighting. The author examines the relationship between the real and the ideal, arguing that feedback between the two follows certain discernable paths. Battle rejects the currently fashionable notion of a "Western way of warfare" and replaces it with more nuanced concepts of varied and evolving cultural patterns of combat. After considering history, Lynn finally asks how the knowledge gained might illuminate our understanding of the war on terrorism.

At the end of her life, frances osborne’s one hundred year old great grandmother lilla was as elegant as ever–all fitted black lace and sparkling white diamonds to her great grandchildren, lilla was both an ally and a mysterious wonder her bedroom was filled with treasures from every exotic corner of the world but she rarely mentioned the japanese prison camps in which she spent much of world war i i, or the elaborate cookbook she wrote to help her survive behind the barbed wire
beneath its polished surface, lilla’s life had been anything but effortless born in 1882 to english parents in the beautiful north china port city of chefoo, lilla was an identical twin growing up, she knew both great privilege and deprivation, love and its absence but the one constant was a deep appreciation for the power of food and place from the noodles of shanghai to the chutney of british india and the roasts of england, good food and sensuous surroundings, lilla was raised to believe, could carry one a long way toward happiness her story is brimming with the stuff of good distant locales, an improvident marriage, an evil mother in law, a dramatic suicide, and two world wars
lilla’s remarkable cookbook, which she composed while on the brink of starvation, makes no mention of wartime rations, of rotten vegetables and donkey meat in the world this magical food journal, now housed in the imperial war museum in london, everyone is warm and safe in their homes, and the pages are filled with cream puffs, butterscotch, and comforting soup in its writing, lilla was able to transform the darkest moments into scrumptious escape
lilla’s feast is a rich evocation of a bygone world, the inspiring story of an ordinary woman who tackled the challenges life threw in her path with an extraordinary determination

Starbucked will be the first book to explore the incredible rise of the starbucks corporation and the caffeine crazy culture that fueled its success part fast food nation, part bobos in paradise, starbucked combines investigative heft with witty cultural observation in telling the story of how the coffeehouse movement changed our everyday lives, from our evolving neighborhoods and workplaces to the ways we shop, socialize, and self medicate
in starbucked, taylor clark provides an objective, meticulously reported look at the volatile issues like gentrification and fair trade that distress activists and coffee zealots alike through a cast of characters that includes coffee wild hippies, business sharks, slackers, hollywood trendsetters and more, starbucked explores how america transformed into a nation of coffee gourmets in only a few years, how starbucks manipulates psyches and social habits to snare loyal customers, and why many of the things we think we know about the coffee commodity chain are false

The Golden Notebook is a 1962 novel by the British writer Doris Lessing. Like her two books that followed, it enters the realm of what Margaret Drabble in The Oxford Companion to English Literature called Lessing's "inner space fiction"; her work that explores mental and societal breakdown. The novel tells the story of Anna Wulf, a writer in post-World War II London. The book is structured as a series of notebooks in different colors, each representing a facet of Anna’s life. Through these notebooks, the novel explores Anna’s struggles with identity, her personal and political conflicts, and her relationships with men. It is a complex narrative that delves into themes of feminism, mental health, and the challenges of living in a rapidly changing world.
