Cecil John Rhodes once said he had only met two creators in South Africa: himself and James Douglas Logan, the Scottish-born founder of Matjiesfontein. Empire, War & Cricket in South Africa explores in detail how Matjiesfontein was created and how Logan developed this little Karoo town into a renowned health resort, attracting the rich and famous – including the likes of South African novelist Olive Schreiner and England cricketer George Lohmann. But above all, this is the untold story of how James Logan was instrumental in developing the game of cricket in South Africa at a time when the country was heading towards war with the British Empire.
Logan immigrated to South Africa in 1877 at the age of 19 and almost immediately began amassing a fortune through business, politics and his high-profile association with that most favoured of imperial pastimes. In Empire, War & Cricket in South Africa, readers will learn how one of the first international cricket matches between South Africa and England took place at Matjiesfontein; explore the controversial 1901 South African cricket tour to England in the midst of the Anglo-Boer War; read the amazing story of how Logan once had the captain and manager of England’s cricket team arrested as they boarded their ship home; and discover Logan’s close relationship with Rhodes and how their ‘shady dealings’ brought down the Premier’s first government.
llustrated throughout with photographs and documents, Empire, War & Cricket in South Africa is a unique social and political history of the workings of the British Empire in South Africa during the late 19th century; a well-researched and fascinating biography of the man who gave us Matjiesfontein; and an entertaining and at times unbelievable story of cricket’s origins in South Africa.

Allergies, asthma, obesity, acne: these are just a few of the conditions that may be caused—and someday cured—by the microscopic life inside us. The key is to understand how this groundbreaking science influences your health, mood, and more.
In just the last few years, scientists have shown how the microscopic life within our bodies— particularly within our intestines—has an astonishing impact on our lives. Your health, mood, sleep patterns, eating preferences—even your likelihood of getting bitten by mosquitoes—can be traced in part to the tiny creatures that live on and inside of us.
In Follow Your Gut, pioneering scientist Rob Knight pairs with award-winning science journalist Brendan Buhler to explain—with good humor and easy-to-grasp examples—why these new findings matter to everyone. They lead a detailed tour of the previously unseen world inside our bodies, calling out the diseases and conditions believed to be most directly impacted by them.
With a practical eye toward deeper knowledge and better decisions, they also explore the known effects of antibiotics, probiotics, diet choice and even birth method on our children’s lifelong health. Ultimately, this pioneering book explains how to learn about your own microbiome and take steps toward understanding and improving your health, using the latest research as a guide.

Cry of the Kalahari (1984) is an autobiographical book detailing two young American zoologists, Mark and Delia Owens, and their experience studying wildlife in the Kalahari desert in Botswana in the mid-1970s.[1] There they lived and worked for seven years in an uninhabited area named Deception Valley in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve.[2][3] With no roads and the nearest civilization eight hours away they had only each other and the animals they studied as company, most of which had never seen humans before. Their research focused mainly on lions, brown hyenas, jackals and other African carnivores. Cry of the Kalahari is the personal story of the Owens' encounters with these and a myriad of other animals and depicts their own struggle to live and work in such an inhospitable and unforgiving environment

Over the decades we have heard a great deal about Shaka, the most famous - or infamous - of Zulu leaders. It may come as a surprise, therefore, that we do not know when he was born, nor what he looked like, nor precisely when or why he was assassinated. In Shaka's case, even these most basic facts of any person's biography remain locked in obscurity.
Meanwhile the public image, sometimes monstrous, sometimes heroic, juggernauts on - truly a 'myth of iron' that is so intriguing, so dramatic, so archetypal, and sometimes so politically useful, that few have subjected it to proper scrutiny.
Myth of Iron: Shaka in history is the first book-length scholarly study of Shaka to be published. It lays out, as far as possible, all the available evidence - mainly hitherto underutilised Zulu oral testimonies, supported by other documentary sources - and decides, item by item, legend by legend, what exactly we can know about Shaka's reign. The picture that emerges in this meticulously researched and absorbing 'anti-biography' is very different from the popular narrative we are used to.

BUNYOLI, MAJORCA, SPAIN
For many, many years, generations have preserved this rough diamond called Bunyoli. Located on more than 250 hectares, with lush old trees, panoramic views of greenery and nature.
Near the Establiments village. As a neighbor is "the Serra de Tramuntana", a World Heritage Site, a title conferred by Unesco in 2011.
The history of the possession began in 1232, when the Barony of Bunyoli was founded. For hundreds of years, their fields served as a source of income, with cultivations of carob, orange and wine, as well as olive trees from which they extracted oil from their own tafona. They also traded with animal husbandry, such as sheep.
The path that leads to the main house bordered with majestic calypsos, which reach 36 meters high, culminates in the bustle that surrounds the mansion, as well as the tafona, the master's house and with views of much of its land. The possession has built approximately 7,500 meters.
The Mansion dates from 1698, built in stone and sandstone. It has 4 floors with 2,838 square meters, distributed in living rooms, kitchens, bedrooms, some with en-suite bathrooms, as well as large terraces and balconies. Each room has huge windows, from where you can enjoy privileged views of the countryside, the mountains, the city of Palma and even the Sea!
Surrounded by a splendid garden, is its beautiful chapel that gave religious service to all the nearby regions and has been used until a few years ago for family events.
Eager to restore the splendor of this historic possession, we make available to people, interested in living the experience of designing the future of the new era of Bunyoli. 15 bedrooms 7 bathrooms
