A Toolmaker

1. Tool repairs & maintenance

• Productivity: Completion of assigned job according to production return due date.
• Understand & apply BAM Standard Operating procedures for:
• Root cause analysis.
• Tooling Repair.
• Fit and assemble parts to make, repair, or modify dies, jigs, gauges, and tools, using machine tools and hand tools.
• Repair tooling/jigs to meet quality requirements.
• Provide support for tooling tryout.
• Problem solving daily issues.
• Repair and maintain press tools and die repairs.
• Routine servicing and regrinding of tools.

2. Quality

• First time buy off of completed job (No concessions, no rejects).
• Assist production setters and operators during set up and first off (where tooling/jigs are problematic) to achieve first off.
• Verify dimensions, alignments, and clearances of finished parts for conformance to specifications, using measuring instruments such as calipers, gauge blocks, micrometers, and dial indicators.
• Verify dimensions, sizes, shapes, and tolerances of assemblies, based on specifications.

3. Preventative maintenance

• Assess problematic tooling/jigs (from job cards) for root cause and capture full detail of root cause onto job card (refer to tool room repair policy document).
• Carry out Planned Preventative Maintenance.

4. Assessments

• Attending breakdowns, identifying fault and problem solving at the press with minimal downtime to aid production.
• Evaluate each job and determine if it can be repaired in press or must be removed to Tool Room for essential maintenance and repair work.
• Estimate length of time required to complete a job and likely consequences of failure to complete work within required timescales.
• Identify and escalate any activity that has the potential to cause harm or damage.
• Report breakdown root causes, equipment faults and concerns to Management.
• Ensure risk assessments are available, read and understood for each activity undertaken.

5. Projects

• Support new project tooling from commissioning stages through to start of production.
• Carry out engineering level changes to tools and modifications

6. Administration

• Document and update die history and other work records.
• Filling in of job cards.

7. General

• Ensure Tool room assets are maintained at required standards (Milling machine/Surface grinder/Lathe, etc.).
• Maintain required housekeeping standards.
• Identify spares requirements and log usage.
