The Great Books of the Western World is a landmark
54-volume collection published by Encyclopædia Britannica (founded in 1768 in
Edinburgh, Scotland) in 1952, designed to make the core canon of Western
thought accessible to the general public. Great Books of the Western World
contains 517 works from 130 of the most renowned minds throughout history. The
complete set is 54 volumes, most of which contain multiple books. Edited by
Mortimer Adler and Robert Hutchins, it features influential works across
philosophy, science, literature, and politics.
The project originated from a desire
for a "core curriculum" of foundational texts, initiated by faculty
at Columbia University and later championed by the University of Chicago in the
1920s-1940s.The first edition was published in 1952 in 54 volumes, with a
heavily revised and expanded second edition released in 1990.
The Syntopicon was a key feature, this
two-volume index (Volume 1 and 2 organized by Adler) categorized the books into
102 "Great Ideas," such as "Angel," "God,"
"Man," and "State," allowing readers to trace these ideas
across centuries.
The set includes a wide range of
thinkers from Aristotle, Homer and Plato to Darwin and Freud, often featuring
complete, unabridged works
