Ferrari has always been (and still is) an exclusive top-tier automaker with offerings only the super-rich can afford. Enzo, LaFerrari, 458 Italia - you name it, the list is filled with all sorts of iconic pieces of automation. Their core focus is sports coupes, but it seems like the tide is changing in a big way.
You've heard the rumours… and we're delighted to confirm they're true (some of them). All will be revealed later this year.
That is the somewhat cryptic post - accompanied by a front-end teaser image - on the Maranello-based brand's official Instagram account that all but confirms the rumours that a production SUV is going to happen. It's likely name? The Purosangue. Lest not forget, the late Ferrari CEO Sergio Marchionne said in 2018 about the possibility of a production SUV: "We're dead serious about this. We need to learn how to master this whole new relationship between exclusivity and scarcity of product."
Perhaps the production of an SUV was his parting gift.
Allowing for some context as to why Ferrari would decided to go the 'big body' route, consumer buying trends have changed significantly over the last couple of decades, and automakers have identified what the people want to drive. Go through just about any brand's line-up, and you'll find a wide selection of SUV offerings to choose from.

Moving with the times
The Italian automaker is not the first top-echelon name to dip its feet in the (luxury) SUV market, joining the likes of Aston Martin, Bentley, Lamborghini, and Rolls-Royce with their own examples in the form of the DBX, Bentayga, Urus, and Cullinan, respectively. But, in a world already filled with SUVs, is it really necessary for an iconic brand to 'break tradition' and follow the crowd?
There is not really a cut-and-dried answer to that simply because the landscape has changed so much over the years and automakers are moving with the times. As an example, Honda's Type R range of high-revving, aspirated engines was their 'claim to fame' but having seen rivals move ahead - by means of forced induction - they did what everyone else did. Electric cars are another example - the likes of Audi, BMW and Volvo aim to have a non-ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) model line-up in the next decade, ushering in a new age of mobility at the same time.
Ferrari's are akin to having attractive sport coupe chassis', couple with high-performance and a raucous exhaust tone. While an SUV will most certainly attract an elite group of customer for the brand, it does kind of go against the grain of their heritage. They are synonymous with motorsport - Formula One in particular – and has also built some of the world's finest roadgoing sports cars. An SUV doesn't quite fit into that blueprint, but then again, there's a first time for everything.
