Volvo introduces its stellar range of electric offerings for the local market

Volvo has announced that its local range of vehicles is now almost entirely electrified, and moving a step closer to its global ambition of transforming into a fully electric car company by 2030.

To further emphasise their commitment, over the next five years, the Swedish brand will launch a full electric car every year with an aim to make all-electric cars 50% of global sales by 2025, with the rest being hybrids. Recharge will be the overarching name for all Volvo's with a fully electric or plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Recharge models made up 34% of the automaker's global sales volume in the fourth quarter of 2021, while plug-in hybrids accounted for a further 28%.

Some of the hybrid and all-electric variants include the:

  • XC40 P8 Recharge
  • XC60 T8 Recharge
  • XC90 T8 Recharge plug-in hybrid and the
  • B5 and B6-badged mild-hybrid variants that make up the remainder of the XC60 and XC90 line-ups.

The S90 and V90 Cross Country offerings also feature mild-hybrid powertrains, while the only purely petrol-powered options in the local range are the T-badged derivatives in the XC40 line-up.

Greg Maruszewski, Managing Director at Volvo Car South Africa, says: "Our mild-hybrid vehicles boast reduced tailpipe emissions, improved fuel economy and stronger on-road performance, making them ideal stepping stones to our plug-in hybrids – which add the major advantage of a pure-electric driving mode – and ultimately our all-electric offering. In short, our completely renewed line-up covers all of the electrification bases."
