Shipping Operations Controller

The successful candidate will be responsible for managing, coordinating, and optimizing the end-to-end movement of goods, ensuring that imports and exports are processed efficiently, cost-effectively, and in compliance with regulatory requirements.

This role will act as the critical link between suppliers, shipping lines, clearing agents, and internal departments to ensure timely, in-full delivery.

Key Responsibilities

• End-to-End Shipment Coordination: Managing the entire lifecycle of air, sea, and road freight shipments from booking to final delivery.
• Documentation Management: Preparing, verifying, and submitting critical shipping documents, including Bills of Lading, packing lists, invoices, and certificates of origin (e.g. EUR1, SADC).
• Customs Compliance: Ensuring all cargo meets local and international regulations, managing customs clearances, and handling tariff classifications.
• Logistics & Planning: Booking freight with shipping lines, arranging haulage, monitoring stack dates, and tracking vessel schedules.
• Vendor & Stakeholder Management: Liaising with freight forwarders, clearing agents, transporters, and port authorities.
• Financial Control: Reconciling supplier invoices, checking freight costings, handling duty refunds, and processing payments.
• Reporting & Problem Solving: Monitoring KPIs, providing status reports, and resolving delays or damages in real-time.

Required Skills and Qualifications

• Experience: Minimum 5 years of experience in freight forwarding, clearing, and shipping operations.
• Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of Incoterms 2020, customs regulations, and HS codes.
• Systems Proficiency: Experience with ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Sage, Oracle) and specialized freight software (e.g., Compu-Clearing, Navis).
• Analytical Skills: High numerical accuracy for cost calculations and reporting.
• Soft Skills: Ability to work under pressure, strong communication skills, and excellent organizational abilities.

Common Qualifications

• Matric/Grade 12 (essential).
• Completed Diploma/Degree in Logistics, Supply Chain, or Clearing and Forwarding.
