Reason for Reporting
Job Purpose
To perform routine laboratory analyses using established procedures to determine product properties and characteristics. Testing is conducted using existing standards, customer-supplied methods, and laboratory-developed test methods in line with the requirements of ISO/IEC 17025, while maintaining a strong focus on laboratory safety.
Key Responsibilities
• Perform routine laboratory tests and analyses on samples in accordance with established procedures and standards.
• Prepare samples, reagents, and laboratory equipment for analysis.
• Record and report test results accurately in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and/or laboratory logbooks.
• Operate, clean, and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment.
• Ensure compliance with laboratory quality standards, procedures, and ISO/IEC 17025 requirements.
• Adhere to all health, safety, and environmental regulations within the laboratory.
• Maintain cleanliness and proper organisation of the laboratory work area.
• Assist with sample collection, labelling, and storage where required.
• Report abnormal results, equipment malfunctions, or safety concerns to supervisors promptly.
Key Skills and Competencies
• Basic understanding of laboratory procedures and testing methods.
• High attention to detail and accuracy.
• Basic numerical and data recording skills.
• Ability to follow instructions and standard operating procedures.
• Good communication and teamwork skills.
• Basic computer literacy (e.g., Microsoft Excel and data entry systems).
• Strong commitment to safety and quality standards.
Experience (Advantageous but not always required)
• Exposure to a laboratory environment through an internship, learnership, or workplace training programme.
• Basic experience with laboratory equipment and sample handling.
Working Conditions
• Work is primarily performed in a laboratory environment.
• May involve handling chemicals and laboratory samples.
• Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required at all times.
Qualifications
• Grade 12 with Mathematics or N3 Technical Mathematics.
• Physical Science is advantageous.
• A National Diploma in Chemistry or related field will be an added advantage
