Mechanical Estimator

Key Responsibilities

1. Tendering & Estimation

• Analyse tender documents, drawings, specifications, and Bills of Quantities (BOQs)
• Prepare detailed cost estimates for:
  • HVAC systems (chilled water, VRF/VRV, ventilation, ducting, extraction systems)
  • Industrial process ventilation and cooling systems
• Perform accurate quantity take-offs (manual and software-based)
• Compile complete and competitive tender submissions within deadlines
• Develop pricing strategies aligned with margin and market conditions

2. Cost Analysis & Pricing

• Source and evaluate supplier and subcontractor quotations
• Build detailed cost breakdowns for:
  • Materials (ducting, piping, insulation, equipment)
  • Labour (installation teams, specialists)
  • Plant and equipment
• Account for site-specific factors such as:
  • Remote project locations
  • Labour productivity and availability
  • Safety and compliance requirements
• Maintain and update cost databases and historical pricing records

3. Technical Evaluation

• Interpret HVAC designs, mechanical drawings, and P&IDs
• Identify risks, discrepancies, and opportunities for value engineering
• Propose cost-effective solutions without compromising quality or compliance
• Liaise with engineering teams to clarify scope and technical details

4. Commercial & Contractual Support

• Assist with:
  • Tender clarifications
  • Commercial submissions
  • Contract documentation
• Review contract conditions (e.g., NEC, FIDIC, JBCC)
• Identify commercial risks and recommend mitigation strategies
• Support project handover to execution teams

5. Compliance & Standards

• Ensure estimates align with:
  • South African National Standards (SANS)
  • Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA)
  • Environmental and energy efficiency regulations
• Include compliance-related costs (safety, permits, QA/QC) in estimates

6. Stakeholder Engagement

• Liaise with:
  • Clients and consultants
  • Suppliers and subcontractors
  • Internal engineering and project teams
• Attend site visits, tender briefings, and clarification meetings as required

Key Skills & Competencies

Technical

• Strong understanding of industrial HVAC systems and components
• Ability to interpret mechanical drawings and P&IDs
• Proficiency in estimation tools (Excel, CCS, CostX, or similar)
• Knowledge of South African engineering and construction
