Commis Chef Position - New Immersive African Cuisine Restaurant Opening in Hillcrest

We are excited to announce the launch of a brand-new, immersive African cuisine restaurant in Hillcrest. As we prepare for our grand opening, we are seeking dedicated and passionate Commis Chefs to join our dynamic kitchen brigade and help create an exceptional culinary experience.
Position: Commis Chef
Location: Hillcrest, KwaZulu-Natal
Experience Required: 1-2 years in professional kitchen environments
Key Responsibilities:
Assist with preparation, cooking, and plating across multiple kitchen sections
Maintain high standards of cleanliness, organisation, and food safety
Follow recipes and instructions from senior chefs with accuracy and consistency
Support mise en place for service and ensure workstation readiness
Rotate through sections to build broad culinary knowledge
Communicate clearly with the team during service and prep
Work efficiently under pressure during long hours and fast-paced services
Requirements:
1-2 years of proven experience in professional kitchen environments
Strong foundational knife skills and basic culinary knowledge
Quick learner with a proactive attitude and willingness to develop
Ability to handle long hours, physical demands, and stressful services
Resilient, disciplined, and able to take constructive feedback
Excellent teamwork and communication skills
High attention to detail and commitment to consistent quality
Must be legally eligible to work in South Africa
Ideal candidates will be based in or around the Hillcrest area
Advantageous Qualifications:
Culinary school certificate or formal training
Experience with African cuisine or diverse flavor profiles
Understanding of modern cooking techniques
Knowledge of food safety and HACCP principles
Growth Path Toward Running a Section:
Develop deep understanding of one section’s mise en place, timing, and dish structure
Progressively take on more responsibility within designated sections
Learn plate costing, stock management, and section coordination
Receive structured mentorship from senior chefs
