Media and Communications Officer (Combatting modern slavery project), ActionAid International

Directorate: Public Engagement and Supporter Growth
Position: Media and Communications Officer - Combatting Modern Slavery in Ethiopia and Ghana
Location: London, Johannesburg, or Nairobi
Duration: Fixed Term until
Contracted Hours: 4-days per week

Role Overview:

ActionAid is implementing an ambitious three-year project, Combatting Modern Slavery in Ethiopia and Ghana, funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad). The project aims to decrease the scale and prevalence of modern slavery in Ethiopia and Ghana through improved government legislation and business practices, as well as increased rights for survivors and those at risk of modern slavery.

The Media and Communications Officer will be responsible for supporting the delivery of international and national media moments, linked to the Combatting Modern Slavery (CMS) project. This role will work closely with country offices, particularly ActionAid Ethiopia and Ghana, to amplify the visibility and voice of stories relating to the project with both global and national significance. Experience pitching to international media outlets and developing compelling stories on sensitive subjects is essential, along with social media skills and collaborative working with internal and external stakeholders.

The successful candidate will:
Develop and support high quality and responsive media and communications products for the Norad-funded Combatting Modern Slavery project.
Work with comms and public engagement colleagues to develop compelling stories and content to support advocacy moments and engage supporters through media, social media and other digital channels.
Draft social media post for the CMS project for ActionAid’s channels in relation to breaking stories, new research, key advocacy moments and sharing relevant media coverage.
Educated to at least university degree level
Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English to produce written work of high quality.
Proven experience in a media relations or communications role in an in-house press office/PR agency or as a
Proven experience of liaising with journalists of all levels
Experience devising and producing successful proactive media campaigns, or equivalent high-profile work as a
Excellent news sense and proven experience in identifying and promoting an engaging story.
Ability to work well under pressure and to meet tight deadlines.
Detail and audience oriented with good multitasking and organisational ability
Ability to work out of office hours as needed.
Ability to travel if necessary
