If you're considering making the move to Gauteng, you'd be hard-pressed to find a more beautiful area of the country that contains so much history and beauty. Located in the Highveld, Gauteng is the smallest province in South Africa, and the site of the country's first all-race elections in 1994.

Gauteng Past and Present

Gauteng was formerly called Pretoria-Witwatersrand-Vereeniging or PWV. The area was founded in the early-1800s and was a large gold-producing region. Because the area was never properly documented before the 1800s, much of the town's early history is unavailable. One of the city's bragging rights is the discovery of some of the oldest fossils known to exist, those of Little Foot and Mrs Ples. Today, the town has a population of over 12 million people, and is the home of the High Court of South Africa and the Constitutional Court.

The climate in the region varies depending on what part you happen to be in at any given time. The province itself enjoys high temperatures averaging about 26 C in January and 16 C in July. Johannesburg is quite a bit cooler due to its altitude. Snow is rare and rain usually comes in the form of brief afternoon thunderstorms during the summer months.

Finding a Place to Live in Gauteng

The easiest way to find flat shares and house shares in Gauteng is by browsing the local classified ads. There, not only will you find a huge list of available properties, but you will also find tonnes of people searching for a housemate or a flatmate. Many offer simple rooms to rent, while others offer a room plus access a full kitchen, laundry room, game room, and more.

Avoid the Scary Flatmate

Although the prospect of slashing monthly expenditures by half is appealing to those living on a budget, you should be smart when choosing with whom you're going to live. Some folks can be a little eccentric, weird, or scary, so taking your time when choosing a housemate is not only smart, but safe. Once you've found a person you're sure you can get along with, be sure to get all agreements in writing. It may save you a lot of frustration in the long run.

If you know you're going to need a place and a roommate in the near future, keep your eye on the local classified ads and you will easily find flat shares and house shares in Gauteng.
