A once in a lifetime opportunity to purchase and live in a historical home. This remarkable property was built pre 1840 and was originally the office and residence of the Justice of Peace when Alexandria was still known as Olifantshoek. Apart from being the magistrates and his familys home and his office, it was also occupied by the jail warden whose duty it was to look after up to 12 convicts that were housed downstairs in the jail. These convicts were mostly made up of the rough woodcutters who got into trouble through fighting and drunkenness. In 1876 a new jail and police station were built and the property was turned into a dwelling. Many prominent residents occupied the property over the years and has always been a well-known landmark in the village. Some renovations were done to keep up with times but the original yellow wood doors, floors and exposed beams were preserved and kept in pristine condition. As was the fashion of the 1800s, the long north facing stoep is still an attractive feature and the ideal spot to spend those lazy winter days or summer evenings. Inside you will find a beautiful lounge/dining room with the trapdoor that leads to the now disused jail. The kitchen has been renovated as well as the 2 bathrooms. The 3 bedrooms are cosy and the original indoor fireplace is still intact in what can be used as either a 4th bedroom or a family room. It also lends itself to a nice self catering space as it has a separate entrance and ensuite bathroom. The garden has huge shady trees and comes with a couple of large cycads. There is no garage but plenty of safe parking in the back garden. Viewing is by appointment only and if this appeals to you, you will not be disappointed. I will gladly show you around.Property Reference #: 1212705Agent Details:Almare SmithRawson Properties222, Main Road, Cape Town, Rondebosch, Western Cape
