Most refractometers are calibrated by using a sample of distilled water. Add a few drops of distilled water to the clear sample plate. Refractometers are temperature sensitive, so allow the hot sample to cool and reach room temperature not exeeding 10 - 30 degrees Celsius.Hold the refractometer up to natural light and take a reading. Most refractometers have a calibration knob or screw that will let you adjust the zero setting. What you want to do now is adjust the refractometer with the included screwdriver so it reads zero with distilled water in it. (A sample of pure water will have a specific gravity of approximately 0.998 at 20 degrees Celsius.) This may take a few tries.Thereafter, you could also use another liquid with known specific gravity (weight per liter) typically these sell as refractometer calibration liquid (not included)
