HISTORY:
The Tipo 105 Spider was launched at the 36th Geneva Motor Show in
March 1966, and together with the Giulia Sprint GT Veloce tested by
the Automotive Press at an event organised in Gardone Riviera. To
choose a name for the Spider, Alfa Romeo announced a write-in
competition, offering an example of the new Alfa as a prize. Over 100
thousand ballots were sent in; the majority from Italy. The winner
was Guidobaldo Trionfi, a man from Brescia, who proposed the name
"Duetto" (duet). The Italian public refer to it as "Osso
di seppia," which means cuttle-fish bones!! Sepia or cuttlefish
is a Spanish delicacy similar to calamari, but they are meatier, with
a rich fresh flavor and almost no fishiness. A "Duetto" was
prominently featured in the movie, "The Graduate" starring
Hollywood actor Dustin Hoffman.
DESCRIPTION:
(VIN Nr.:AR1470035). This Spider is period correct for a 1300cc
Junior (1968-1972), except for a few cosmetic items, such as the
plastic Carrello covers fitted over the headlights. (The Junior model
did not receive covers). Also the engine fitted is not the original
1300cc engine. The correct wiper set-up (wipers face each other) and
raised door-handles are present, and the front scudetto ('little
sheild') has 5-bars. There is also a prominent 'pinch' on the tip of
the front panel behind the scudetto. (This 'pinch' was deleted some
time around 1972, making the nose of the Spider very smooth from then
on). She has been restored, is rust free, but needs attention to the
paintwork. Mechanically it's in a driveable condition and licensed on
the road.
THE
INTERIOR: The basic black interior is correct and original. New
carpets have been fitted as well as a new black canvas top which fits
nicely with good rubber weatherstrip. The steering wheel and
instruments are in excellent condition, and the view from behind the
wheel is refreshingly clean and simple. The sleek painted dash is
simple with auxiliary instruments angled toward the driver, and the
5-speed gearshift falls easily to hand.
SERIES
PRODUCTION: The Duetto body style was only produced for about three
years. Duetto's and their 'round-tailed' 1750 descendants are the
most valuable of all Type 105 Spider's.
SELLING
PRICE: R465.000 ZAR - before delivery destination(Recently
a 1300 Duetto sold at auction for: R3,253,338.82 ZAR in the UK)
