Toyota still on top - Here are South Africa's 10 best-selling auto brands of 2022

Even if the economy is a bit iffy at the moment with fluctuating interest rates and fuel price hikes, people are still able to buy brand-new vehicles. Some models sell better than others but cumulatively all contribute to monthly sales.

The market is currently hot for bakkies and compact SUVs, and that is where buyers are channeling their money. Passenger car sales are also on the rise, compared to your more premium or workhorse-type offerings.

The Haval H6 GT, Audi RS3 Sportback and RS3 sedan, Subaru WRX, Honda Civic RS and Nissan Qashqai are just some of the new models that launched locally in 2022.

Leading the charge

Toyota’s figures, for example, include the Lexus and Hino brands, while the Volkswagen Group’s tally incorporates Audi sales. In addition, Chery started reporting local sales figures to Naamsa only in July 2022, so unfortunately, the Chinese brand couldn’t be considered for this list.

The Japanese brand still remains the country's best-seller by some distance and while that will likely remain the case for the coming years, the likes of Haval has now become a top 10 fixture, missing out on overtaking Kia and claiming 8th spot by 122 units. Suzuki is also hot on the heels of Volkswagen.

Ford is not doing extremely well and that's because they have culled most of their passenger cars and focussed more towards light-commercial vehicles like the Ranger bakkie, for example.

With more models set to launch in 2023, one can expect that to once again have an impact on overall sales come end of 2023. Some automakers might even break sales records like Suzuki did in the middle of last year. All eyes will be on Chery as they unfortunately couldn't be considered for the list as they only started reporting local sales figures to Naamsa in July 2022.

For those wondering, here are South Africa’s 10 best-selling automakers of 2022:
