Research Assistant (2 Year Contract) Wits SBIMB

Main purpose of the job:
To test, calibrate and install air pollution sensors outdoors and indoors, maintain the instruments, and analyse the data, to improve understanding of how low-cost sensors can be used to assess air pollution exposure
Location:
Sydney Brenner Institute for Molecular Bioscience, 9 Jubilee Road, Parktown, Johannesburg – and travel between Soweto and Agincourt
Key performance areas:
Set up, test, and deploy air quality sensors
Contribute to data collection, quality assurance, and analysis
Contribute to air quality sensor deployment planning and implementation in communities
Engage strongly with local, national, and international collaborators as a regular part of the role, including the University of Leicester, South African Medical Research Council, and North-West University
Write reports and contribute to scientific papers on sensor installation and calibration methods, performance, and applications
Required minimum education and training:
BSc Hons or equivalent in Computer Science or related subject or Undergraduate bachelor’s degree in physical sciences/engineering/computer science (with some work experience)
Required minimum work experience:
1-2 years in a research environment with knowledge of air-pollution sensors
Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities:
Sound written and verbal communication skills
Able to prioritize own workload in meeting deadlines and handle pressure
Preferred languages - IsiZulu, siSwati or Xitsonga/isiNdebele
Travel might be required to Soweto and Bushbuckridge as and when necessary
Experience of at least one of the following but ideally both:
Hands-on working with hardware technology preferably sensors
Computing experience working with data (demonstrable experience in at least one programming language)
Ability to work in a team
