1984 Toyota Celica Supra Manual 2.8i with 86,000km one owner from new. Internationally there are two variants, the P-Type (Performance) which normally came in a 5 speed manual transmission and limited slip differential, and the L-Type (Luxury) which usually came with a 4 speed auto transmission. Both versions had the same 2.8i 6 cylinder engine, which essentially became the engines that powered the Toyota Cressida. The difference between the L-Type and P-Type were cosmetic, with the L-Type coming with an digital dash (this is where the digital dash for the 3.0lt Cressida originated from), no wheel arches, 195/70R14 tyres and normally the auto gearbox was spec’d. The P-Type coming standard with wide wheel arches, analogue dash, 225/60R14 tyres and usually spec’d in manual. Overseas, P-Types had the rear sunshade (massive rear roof wing) and a tailgate wing. South Africa seemed to get only one spec, L-Type (digital dash), but with the P-Type wheel arches and tyres, and no sunshade wing nor tailgate wing, this is what we have here.
Completely stock standard. Serviced by Toyota until about 5 years ago, thereafter serviced by private Toyota Master Tech as dealer said parts are too old. Service history was on the system, but when Toyota switched systems a couple of years ago, everything fell off the system. The service system was the old job card based system. Original keys, receipts dating back to 1985 even for the aftermarket radio. Car is 42 years old but absolutely brilliant condition. I’m in possession of the original pink title deed from 1984. Estate vehicle purchased directly from original owner. Small passenger door accident back in 1990, door imported from Japan. Rear bumper bash in town driving around 2010 resulting in cracked right tail light - which still remains as there are no new parts available.
Cruise control, electric windows, sunroof, aircon (will be re-gased), 3-section manual pump for driver lumbar support (it is rumorored that this is where Reebok got their pump idea for Reebok Pumps in the 90’s). The three bladders fill with air, and then you select which one you want to deflate with one of the three release buttons on the side of the seat.
A few things will be taken care of before the successful sale:
1. Front bumper paint cracked - will be repaired.
2. Aircon will be re-gased.
3. 4 new period correct Bridgestone Radial tyres 225/60/R14 will be included in the sale (R18,000).
What needs attention to make it perfect:
1. The black paint on the engine is fading, would need a fresh coat (never been painted).
2. Door rubbers are starting to tear.
3. Source original radio - it has period correct aftermarket radio from 1985.
4. 76mm headers and exhaust will give her some performance gain. Vehicle has standard exhaust.
5. Air filter upgrade will also enhance performance. Vehicle has standard air system.
For 1984, this was competing with Porsche. Today, a stock Polo 1.2TSI is faster, but not many people can say they own one of the last Celica Supra’s. The MK1 and Mk2 Celica’s were 4 cylinder engines, with the performance versions being the Celica Supra with 6 cylinder engines. From Mk3 onwards, the Celica and the Supra were separate models. Car was detailed with wax applied. R750,000 open to offers.
