I DO NOT BUY COINS, DO NOT TRY TO SELL ME ANYTHING This coin is available for collection or shipping from Claremont, Cape Town. WHATSAPP MESSAGE ONLY No calls, no emails, no gumtree messages, no texts, no voice messages.CASH ON COLLECTION OR UPFRONT INSTANT EFT______________________________________________________________________________________________________An authentic Roman silver denarius of Emperor Nero, struck at the Rome mint around AD 64–65.IdentificationEmperor: Nero (reigned AD 54–68)Denomination: Silver denariusDate: AD 64–65Mint: RomeReferences:RIC I² 55BMCRE 83/85OCRE RIC I² Nero 55 ObverseThe legend reads:NERO CAESAR AVGVSTVS("Nero Caesar Augustus")It shows a laureate, bearded portrait of Nero facing right.ReverseThe reverse depicts Roma, the personification of Rome, seated left on a cuirass (breastplate), holding:Victory (Nike) in her right handA parazonium (ceremonial sword) in her leftBehind her are shields and military equipment. The inscription is simply:ROMAThis military type was issued shortly after Nero assumed the title Germanicus, emphasizing Rome's strength and military power. AuthenticityFrom these photographs I do not see any obvious signs of a modern cast counterfeit.Positive signs include:Sharp struck details rather than soft cast surfaces.Correct portrait style for Nero.Lettering that matches known dies.Natural wear and toning.Edge appears consistent with a hammered ancient silver coin (the small edge nick isn't concerning). That said, authentication from photographs can never be 100% certain. The most useful additional information would be:Weight (to 0.01 g)Diameter (mm)A clear photo of the edge around the entire circumference.A genuine example typically weighs about 3.2–3.5 g and measures around 18–20 mm. ConditionI'd estimate the condition as approximately:Very Fine (VF)Reasons:Portrait remains attractive.Legends are mostly readable.Reverse figure is well preserved.Moderate circulation wear.Small edge flaw around 3 o'clock. It's an appealing collector-grade example.Estimated Market ValueAssuming it is genuine:Retail dealer price: approximately US$300–500Auction estimate: approximately US$220–400Exceptional provenance or a premium dealer: up to US$600+The Nero portrait is very popular with collectors, which helps demand.Historical ContextThis coin was struck only a year or so before the Great Fire of Rome (AD 64) and just a few years before Nero's downfall and suicide in AD 68.A denarius represented roughly a day's pay for a Roman laborer or legionary during this period, making it an important everyday silver coin.Overall assessmentIdentification: Nero silver denarius, Rome mint, AD 64–65 (RIC I² 55).Authenticity (from photos): Appears promising, with no immediate red flags.Estimated value: Approximately US$300–500 (about R5,400–R9,000 at recent exchange rates), depending on confirmation of authenticity, weight, and whether it is sold privately, through a dealer, or at auction.
