Battlefield 4 is a military first-person shooter set in the near future and basically a direct continuation of Battlefield 3. Like all games in the series, the focus is on its multiplayer mode in which player either take the role of an assault (front soldiers with medic abilities), recon (snipers), support (front soldiers who can give out ammo) or engineers (explosives experts). All classes have special abilities and gadgets which can be unlocked over time. In a variety of mostly team-based playing variants – most importantly conquest in which certain points on the maps have to be held by the own team and the faster rush mode with an defending team and an attacking team which has to destroy certain points – players face each other on usually big maps with a variety of vehicles to use.
Of course this instalments features various small and big differences to its predecessors. The most important are the interactive “Levolution” elements which emphasize the destroyable areas; one of the unique selling points of the Frostbite engine: each map has one level element which significantly changes how the level looks and plays when destroyed. Battlefield 4 also brings back two elements from previous instalments: naval warfare and the commander mode. The commander is an additional player who sees the level from an overhead map, gives orders to the team members and can assign missile strikes. In contrast to Battlefield 2, the commander is not an actual player character on the battlefield and therefore can’t be killed. New playing modes are Defuse (both teams have to detonate a bomb in a target zone, each player has only one “life” per round) and Obliteration (there spawns only one bomb pack on the map which has to be used to detonate three points on the map).
Like the predecessor, Battlefield 4 features a singleplayer campaign. A Chinese general overthrows the government, starts a war with the whole world (but is allied with Russia) and the USA has to save the day. The player takes the role of a faceless soldier named Recker, as commander of a small troop he can assign basic orders, who has to survive several missions of the usual Call of Duty variety: linear levels with a lot of boom and hundreds of enemies to shoot. In comparison to Battlefield 3, some levels are a bit more and in some cases the player drives a vehicle. Of course there are also the usual stealth and torture sequences. There is no co-op mode anymore.

The game’s most innovative feature is the freedom of choice and movement. Every architectural detail like window ledges, carvings in the stone or wooden bars can be used to move on the walls. This allows the player to have intense chase scenes if by any chance you’re hunted by the guard.
There are several ways you can reach your goal in the game. Using eavesdropping, interrogation and pickpocketing, you can find out information about your next target. You can then use this information to choose whether you take on the targets by full frontal assault or with a properly placed throwing knife from the cover of the rooftops.
Depending on your choice, you’ll have to deal with the citizens and knights of the cities who will become suspicious of a cloaked person wondering on the rooftops or near the mission targets. There are several situations where you can blend in the crowd, with luck, you can take out your target without anyone looking your way. Altaïr has a small but effective arsenal of weapons, such as swords and throwing knives and he can learn new combat skills to help him on his mission.

Asura’s Wrath is an action game where the player controls the titular Asura. He is one of the eight elite demigods, and their main Guardian General, who leads a legion to fight a race of beasts called Gohma who roam Earth, called Gaea in the game. He serves the emperors who rose as the leaders of Shinkoku Trastrium, a civilization that unified all nations. Demigods derive their power from mantra, a source powered by the emotion of mortals. The civilization however drained the planet of its resources and the Gohma was a natural phenomenon to combat the power of Shinkoku Trastrium. It leads to the War of Creation which neither side can win. Eventually Vlitra is awakened, a Gohma the size of the continent that causes the demigods to erect Karma Fortress, an orbital space station. The game starts when the Gohma attack the space station and specifically a giant laser known as Brahmastra, powered by mantra, that could wipe out all Gohma. Asura’s daughter Mithra is chosen by the 128th Emperor Strada to become the main priestess to guide the mortal’s prayers to provide mantra, but the appointment is not to Asura’s liking. The main story is split up into three parts with 18 episodes in total. These follow the style of an anime series with opening and ending credits, including cut-scenes and a preview of the next part of the story at the end. Next to a hidden ending the game’s story is further extended through DLC with a fourth part, lost episodes, and extensions of existing episodes.
Large parts of the game are played as a third-person fighting game with a focus on melee combat. Asura has different attacks that can be chained into combos. Heavy attacks cause him to overheat however and cannot be used continuously. There are dive attacks to engage from the air, dash to break through shields and a quick recovery attack to reduce damage after being hit, along with regular counters and dodging. He also has a ranged cannon that can lock onto enemies and blast opponents and projectiles out of the sky. By inflicting and receiving damage an Unlimited gauge near the top of the screen is filled up. Once full it can be activated for the Unlimited mode for more strength and no overheating. Next to the green health bar there is a red Burst gauge filled up by defeating enemies, inflicting damage, and following on-screen prompts. Once full a powerful attack is unleashed and that one is often needed to finish off the most powerful opponents and advance the plot.
For many parts the game shifts into rail shooter sequences where Asura soars through the skies. In those sequences movement is limited to a fixed axis for the area shown on the screen and the camera rotates automatically. Asura attacks and locks onto multiple targets and needs to evade projectiles Space Harrier style. The game has many cinematic events that require direct input from the player. These appear during gameplay but also during static cinematics or flight sequences. These quick-time events are rated based on accuracy and speed, and even during cinematics missing them can cause Asura to die or lose a significant amount of health.

Dark Souls is a third-person action RPG and a spiritual successor to 2009’s Demon’s Souls. Mechanically, it is very similar to its predecessor. The player can choose between several character classes for the protagonist, choose the gender, and customize his or her physical appearance. Character attributes can be manually increased when leveling up. The game takes place in a series of interconnected, mostly dungeon-like areas populated by enemies. Some areas can be accessed freely, though the enemies there may be too hard for the player to tackle at earlier stages. Combat allows detailed options such as active parrying, blocking, rolling, and different attacks with equipped weapon. The player must pay close attention to both their vitality and stamina meters. All actions will reduce stamina, and when the stamina bar is empty the player is left vulnerable.
Much like its predecessor, Dark Souls touts its hardcore pedigree and high level of difficulty. Even the most mundane of enemies can be deadly if not handled with care, and many situations will seem impossibly unfair at first glance, but there is always a solution to be found. The game takes place in the kingdom of Lordran, which is a large continuous world where all areas of the game are interconnected. The game also features a unique and extensive online play system, where players can attack or assist each other for benefits, as well as find and leave messages for each other.
The player can improve their abilities and equipment using Souls, which are taken from defeated enemies and function both as a currency and experience points. There is also a secondary, much more scarce currency called Humanity, which provides a number of situational benefits. Humanity can be used to revive to human form, which allows the player to kindle bonfires to earn more healing items, as well as to call for assistance from NPCs or other players. However, if the player is defeated, they will revert to hollow, return to the last bonfire they rested at, and lose all souls and humanity they had on them. It can be recovered by reaching the spot where they died, but if they die again before collecting them, they are lost forever.

Lips is a singing game in the vein of Sony’s SingStar series of games. Much like the popular past time of karaoke, players sing along to the lyrics of songs that are displayed on-screen. The game also judges you based on pitch, earning you points based on how accurately you sang. At certain points in the game, players are prompted to perform gestures with the microphone (such as tilting it upwards). When they do this, the bonus ‘Star Stream’ mode is activated which earns even more points.
Lips can be played in either Solo, VS, or Co-Op modes. At any time during solo play, a second player can shake their wireless mike to create a multiplayer game. VS mode is a battle for the highest score, while Co-Op has players working together to achieve a high score. If both players trigger Star Stream simultaneously in co-op, their star bonuses are doubled.
There are also special game modes for those who want to try something different: in Kiss, the on-screen couple gets closer together the better that both players sing. When they get close enough, you’ll be prompted to tilt your mikes up to make them kiss. Time Bomb lights a bomb’s fuse at the start of the song. By singing well, you’ll fill a glass up with water – when there’s enough water inside, use it to extinguish the fuse.
Players who don’t want to sing can still participate by using a controller as a Noise Maker. This allows them to add sound effects such as snapping fingers, cowbells, tambourines and even crowd noise to the song.
