Output Voltage / Energy: Selectable 3 kV at 270 Joules (or up to ~500 J in some refs) / 5 kV at 750 Joules.
Pulse Rate: Adjustable, typically every 3–10 seconds; supports single shot or timed pulsing.
DC Test / Proof Testing: Up to 5 kV at 200 mA.
Burning Function: 5 kV at 200 mA (short duration only, for fault conditioning).
Capacitor: Plastic oil-filled (non-PCB).
HV Transformer: Dry type, temperature protected, single secondary coil.
Safety Features: MCLS (Mains Condition Lockout System) — checks polarity, mains high/low voltage, and earthing integrity to prevent unsafe operation.
ICE Coupler: Built-in for signal output to TDR for fault pre-location (e.g., with PCA101).
Enclosure: 308 stainless steel, IP21 rated (robust, some older variants may use aluminium or IP67 Pelican case).
Dimensions: 480 × 460 × 375 mm.
Weight: 43 kg.
Mobility: Designed for trolley, trailer, or van mounting.
Power Supply: 230 V 50/60 Hz, 16 A (some refs note 220–240 V, 10–15 A).
Operating Environment: Indoor/outdoor, 10°C to +50°C, humidity ≤85%.
Accessories (standard): 5 m HV test lead, mains lead, earth lead
Primary Uses
Pinpointing faults in low-voltage power cables: It generates high-voltage surges (thumps) that are discharged into a faulty cable, creating an audible acoustic signal and/or electromagnetic wave at the fault site. This allows technicians to precisely locate underground or hidden faults (e.g., in compacted soil or concrete) using complementary tools like a ground microphone amplifier (such as Adret's GMA105/205) for acoustic detection.
Target applications: Commonly used for low-voltage networks, such as street lighting systems, smaller consumer supplies, or similar power distribution setups where higher-voltage models aren't required.
Fault pre-location: It includes a built-in ICE (Impulse Current Method) coupler/output, allowing connection to a Time Domain Reflectometer (TDR) like the Adret PCA101 for pre-locating faults before pinpointing.
