The flamboyantly dressed German Landsknecht mercenary lived a harsh, brutal life and were famous for their giant, two-hand Flamberge sword. After using the Flamberge to break an enemys row of front-line pikemen, a smaller, one-hand sword was employed for the ensuing close-quarters combat the Katzbalger. Not as fancy as its slightly frivolous looking (but nonetheless deadly) big brother, the Katzbalger (roughly translates to cat-gutter) was still highly styled and was designed to be an effective cut and thrust sword.Beginning in the 14th century, Swiss pikemen established themselves as dominant mercenaries. But an equally courageous, stout competitor later appeared from Germany. Landsknecht troops challenged Swiss superiority in a No Quarter rivalry that lasted for years. Carried by all Landsknecht troops, including the pikemen and arquebusiers, this sword had an ornate closed s shaped guard and an extra long, fluted pommel. The Katzbalger was most assuredly respectful of its Renaissance roots.This replica by Windlass Steelcrafts is just as battle ready as the originals. The beautifully rendered grip would do any Landskecht proud. The fluting in the pommel extends seamlessly into the wood grip, and the guard is expertly spiral twisted and terminates in half-spheres. The tempered, high carbon steel blade is adorned with a trio of fullers that slightly lighten the blade. The black leather scabbard is mildly decorated with leather bands that criss-cross and are knotted near the throat and has a unique steel tip. Guard is 4-1/4 wide. Magnificent Chu Jian is a single hand Chu Jian modeled after the design of 2,000+ year old Chu Jian specimens excavated during the 1950-1980 from tombs dating back to 315 - 221 BC, in regions within the ancient Kingdom of Chu. Kingdom of Chu was famous throughout the land for their steel swords and Chu Jian's fame was mentioned in multiple historical records. Contemporary with the mature bronze swords, Chu Jian represents an advancement in iron foundry technology and is an example of early transition from bronze to steel weapons. In the hand guard are two inscriptions in ancient bird-worm seal script of the word for gentleman warrior "Shi".The blade have double wide groove fashioned after bronze swords showing the transitional design from bronze weapon to the first steel weapon. This is part of a limited production run of practical swords made by Cloudhammer Forge of Taiwan/Vietnam to be used for test cutting in the context of HEMA tournaments and similar activities. The blade is of a flattened diamond cross-section and the pommel and handguard are made of stainless steel. The grip is a cord-wrapped wooden core. The scabbard is a simple wood core with a faux leather wrap. The fit between the sword and scabbard is positive, but not unreasonably tight either. The blade itself is made of Hudson S5 medium-carbon steel that has been heat treated appropriately at Cloudhammer's facilities. This is a real deal, full tang sword with sharp edges for cutting. The tang is peened over the pommel and has been polished to the point of being almost invisible. Please note, that as this is a real sword, it is a potentially dangerous item that should not be bought as a gift for children. Also, despite the quality of the steel used, swords can not be used in the same manner as garden tools without destroying them, so please note that trying to cut down trees or splitting wood etc will damage any sword, no matter how superior it is in terms of construction.
