Georgia o' keeffe
by nancy frazier
with 70 full colour and 15 black and white illustrations
using nature as her inspiration, georgia o' keeffe developed a highly visible, per sonal, and monumental style without parallel in american painting perhaps more symbolic than abstract, o' keeffe's paintings of simplified, enlarged and iso lated natural forms expressed the spiritu ality of nature, and of the artist herself recognized as one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century georgia o' keeffe created paintings that had a powerful effect on other artists and on the public yet the more the public came to love her work, the more controversial o' keeffe became ironically, the popularity of her works and her own personal image as an eccentric have sometimes worked to blur her importance as an artistic innovator
born in wisconsin in 1887, o' keeffe knew she would be an artist by the time she was 12 she studied at the art institute of chicago and at the art students league in new york city in new york she met photographer alfred stieglitz, whom she married in 1924 stieglitz exhibited her paintings in his new york gallery, where they caused ripples of excitement and scandal as o' keeffe's reputation grew, she struggled to maintain an independent mind and fresh artistic perspective she dressed only in black and white, but in her work she seemed to invent color as a contempo rary artist remarked, " in her canvases each color almost regains the fun it must have felt within itself on forming the first rainbow "
in the late 1920s o' keeffe began to spend time in the southwest, and after her husband's death in 1946 she moved permanently to new mexico it was in the southwest that she began to make visible the concept that art and one's senses are inseparable for o' keeffe, sensuality was realized in the stark design of her floral forms and other natural elements that overwhelmed the space of her canvases probably most like a trademark were her paintings of animal skulls, done without morbidity, but with a symmetrical grace expressive of their affinity with the eternal
with an insightful text accompanying a portfolio of her finest works in full color, this book captures the haunting, sometimes overwhelming quality of georgia o' keeffe's unique vision
n a n c y f r a z i e r, who graduated from sarah lawrence college, spent her junior year in paris visiting museums and studying art history her early profes sional life was in magazine journalism, first at newsweek and then as the found ing editor of a weekly feature magazine, hampshire life
in 1985 nancy frazier's book, special museums of the northeast, was published since then she has edited a museum goers newsletter, museum insights, issued six times a year, which specializes in find ing small museums with exceptional col lections across north america
recently, to combine her interests in art and writing, ms frazier returned to school and is currently enrolled as a graduate student in art history at the university of massachusetts in amherst in this book about georgia o' keeffe, ms frazier explores the fascination of the artist as innovator and as an american icon

Into The Darkness - Virginia Andrews - Hardback.
As lovely as one of the precious gems at her parents' jewellery store, Amber Taylor is shy and introspective - qualities misread by others as being stuck-up and superior. Facing a long, lonely summer working at the family shop, Amber's world lights up when the Matthews family suddenly moves in to the house next door, a property that has stood neglected for the longest time. And when she meets Brayden Matthews, an only child just like her, Amber soon becomes infatuated with this handsome, quirky young man who seems to know her innermost feelings almost before she does, who takes her places she never knew existed in her small town. Their connection is electrifying, unlike anything Amber's felt before. But as quickly as he appears, Brayden vanishes into the darkness. And finding out the truth about him will push Amber Taylor to the edge of madness...

The Blind Years - Catherine Cookson.
Bridget Gether's parents had been killed in the wartime blitz and she had lived with the Overmeers at Balderstone, their sprawling property in the Northumbrian countryside, since she was a child. Unaware that she had been manipulated into agreeing to marry their son Laurence, only an encounter with Bruce Dickenson, the son of a neighbouring farmer, opened her eyes to the possibility that she might be making a mistake. 'Once you are married,' Bridget's future mother-in-law tried to reassure her, 'everything will fall into place'.
But Bridget had her reservations, although she told herself she has loved Laurence Overmeer with a schoolgirl passion for years. But could she trust him, especially after the event that had caused this heart-searching? Had he been seeing someone else all the time he had been courting her? She decided that there were sufficient grounds for doubt, so she called off the marriage.
However, she had reckoned without the formidable Overmeer family, whose desperate business straits compelled them to take whatever steps they felt were necessary to protect their interests. As for Laurence, he could not forgive Bridget for the humiliation of rejection, so he made his own plans for revenge. But he could not have known that someone else was planning a different kind of revenge, and that the outcome would shake the very foundations of the Overmeer family.
The Blind Years, another of Catherine Cookson's part-mysteries, part-love stories, once again displays her consummate skill at portraying the nuances of family conflict.

April Taylor, on the other hand, was short, sensitive and overweight - and she couldn't bounce back from their father's cutting criticisms the way Brenda did. And she could see how his cruel behaviour was tearing away at his gentle mother.
But a glimmer of happiness returns when Brenda brings home her college roommate: beautiful, bewitching Celia. And April wonders if she might not be so different from Brenda after all . . .

Melody - Virginia Andrews - Logan Series #1.
Melody Logan knew her beautiful mother, Haille, was unhappy in their hardscrabble mining town....
But with her wonderful father's unwavering love, Melody always felt safe -- until a dreadful mine accident ripped her from her family's moorings.
She was still devastated by her father's death when she left West Virginia with Haille to follow her mother's dream of becoming a model or actress. But first they stopped in Cape Cod to visit her father's family at last.
Melody knew only that her grandparents had disowned their son when he married Haille -- just because she was an orphan, her mother said. Yet moments after Melody first laid eyes on dour, Bible-spouting Uncle Jacob, nervous Aunt Sara, and her cousins -- handsome Cary, whose twin, Laura, had been killed recently in a sailing accident, and sweet, deaf little May -- Haille announced that Melody was to live with them.
Sleeping in Laura's old room, Melody was awash in a sea of grief and confusion, with only her beloved fiddle to comfort her. Then Cary revealed the truth he'd gleaned about her parents -- a sad shocking story that only puzzled her more. Melody knew nothing of the dark deceptions that would soon surface...the devastating betrayals she would face before she glimpsed the faint, beckoning lights of a safe harbor....

Taming Natasha - Nora Roberts - The Stanislaskis #1 - Silhouette.
Broken promises, shattered dreams
Natasha Stanislaski left youthful indiscretions far behind when she settled in rural West Virginia. Her way with children made her toy store a success; her fiery temperament kept men safely at bay. Then brash Spence Kimball and his adorable little girl joined forces to nudge their way into her shop...and her closely guarded heart.
Sensing that a hidden wound was what made Natasha such a tigress, Spence cautiously probed her gentler emotions, nurturing the feelings she both longed for and dreaded. Slowly he felt her sensuality stir, felt her pain yield to passion. But when he vowed to love her always, make her his wife and the mother of his child, she bristled in terror. What would it take to tame her fears?

Justice Is A Women - Catherine Cookson.
The day Joe Remington brought his new bride to Fell Rise, he had already sensed she might not settle easily into his home just outside the Tyneside town of Fellburn. Making plain her disapproval of Joe's familiarity with the servants, questioning the donation of food to striking miners' families - these objections and more soon rubbed Joe and the local people up the wrong way, a problem he could easily have done without. For this was 1926, the year of the General Strike, the effects of which would nowhere be felt more acutely than in this heartland of the North-East.
Then when Elaine became pregnant, she saw it as a disaster and only the willingness of her unmarried sister Betty to come an see her through her confinement made it bearable. But in the long run, would Betty's presence only serve to widen the rift between husband and wife, or would she help to bring about a reconciliation?

In
Namibia, the 1980s were a dark decade of human rights abuses by South African
security forces. Justice David Smuts, then a young Windhoek lawyer, felt
compelled to take on the system. His gripping memoir details several dramatic
cases, including the freeing of detainees held secretly for six years, proving
that torture was used to extract ‘confessions’ and that Koevoet knowingly
killed citizens. He also takes a new look at the assassination of his close
friend, SWAPO activist Anton Lubowski. Condition: like new, unread copy. Price

Autobiographical in nature, yet global in its true scope, Song Without Words brings to light the gifts of a major figure whose previously unknown works enrich our knowledge of literature, photography, and history. On the whole, historians have not been kind to Sophia Tolstoy, wife of the great novelist. The deep exasperation she often felt for her husband's impractical social views, which she rightly saw as a threat not just to her way of life but to that of her whole family and estate, is expressed for all to see in her diaries; these were used against her by those who took her husband's side. Yet she was a remarkable woman in her own right, as this book of photographs begins to make clear. Married to Tolstoy for 48 years, completely absorbed in his life, work and personality, she bore him a large family, she was a woman of formidable energy and talented photographer. Condition: very good (hardcover). Price R470. Can be couriered to any place in South Africa at an additional cost
