All Martial Arts
are the same....
...it is the people
involved that are different.
It is easy to learn about Martial Arts today; just Google it, learn from
YouTube clips, online videos, movies, even through correspondence. People are
certifying themselves and calling themselves “masters”.
Today it seems everyone knows something about Martial Arts. Around every corner
there is a new Martial Arts school claiming to be the next big thing. All you
need to ask is "who is your teacher". If you are interested in the
study of Martial Arts then history, reality, and truth, need to be understood.
Martial comes the Latin word "mars" which means war! Therefore the
study of The Art of War, means to understand the various situations that can be
considered hostile. Whether you are fighting in a large team, side by side, or
by yourself against many attackers, you need to be able to survive and to be able to
over overcome the situation. That means physically, mentally, and spiritually.
The evolution of Martial Arts can easily be seen in throughout history by simply
studying wars and the evolution of the military and the armies of the world.
Fighting is a broad subject today and many schools and styles offer
specialisation in one area e.g sport fighting (boxing, kickboxing, mma,
Sanshou, Kuoshu, wrestling, etc etc), street fighting (environment, urban
areas, no rules, random weapons etc etc), traditional fighting (duals, honour
matches, death matches, ritual fighting, etc etc), crowd and riot control
(security services, bouncers, police and task teams, etc etc), military warfare
(tactical fighting, guerrilla warfare, espionage, etc etc), and many others.
However, to be an all-rounded warrior, you have to understand and train in all
aspects of the concept of fighting. Sun Tsun's The Art of War explains these
concepts and how it applies to the warrior ethos. Today, many fighters,
warriors, businessmen, entrepreneurs, and even other styles of Martial Arts
(including the new ones) make use of these concepts and even go as far as
calling it their own.
No need to re-invent the wheel.
At Shun Wu Tang, we are simply scholars of the Martial Arts seeking to train
and understand the different games, wars, battles, and situations that Martial
Arts can help us with. We are proud to boast the most impressive lineage today
with our living Grandmaster and our tried and tested curriculum that has been
used in many battles and wars. It was not designed simply for one on one sport
fighting, nor was it designed for the movies. There are no fancy looking
movements, nor is there some strict code that says you must devote your life to
your "master" and live your life like a monk.
The journey in Martial Arts is personal for everyone and it is a quest for
knowledge and for truth. If you start your journey off with lies, how far do
you think you will get!?
To find the right school is simple; find the right environment with like-minded
people. When there is no hidden agendas, no hidden costs (generally in most schools, if there's different
classes, there's different costs), no hidden secret moves, and no hidden clauses,
then you will be able to develop.
Ask questions! Seek the truth! Look for explanations! Apply what is given!
