hier voor my op die lessenaar lê, soos 'n stuk rooskwarts, 'n groot klont teesuiker: herinnering nie net aan die dae toe dit nog bekend was nie (watter kind weet vandag van so iets?) maar aan c louis leipoldt, wat dit vir my gegee het daardie aand was markus ( j m h viljoen, redakteur van die huisgenoot), sy vrou anna (halfsuster van dr d f malan, nou mev preller) en ek by hom op sy kamer in seepunt dit was in sy later jare, nadat sy huis in kenilworth, daardie gasvrye huis waar sy vriende so dikwels om die tennisbaan en die eetkamertafel gesels het, reeds verkoop was ons het eers in kaapstad by 'n chinese restaurant geëet, waar hy geesdriftig oor die chinese kookkuns gesels het, en toe na sy kamer toe gegaan om na 'n aantal halfedelgesteentes te kyk: destyds een van sy belangstellinge vir anna het hy 'n besonderse sirkoon gegee wat sy in 'n ring laat set het die teesuiker is ook in die loop van die aand uitgehaal en aan ons uitgedeel my eerste kennismaking met leipoldt as persoon was in 1925 sy verse van voor dié tyd het ek natuurlik geken vir my geslag was die verse van marais, celliers, totius en leipoldt die bolwerk van ons taal, die waarborg van 'n eie identiteit my eerste skryfwerk wat in druk verskyn het, was 'n brief as sewentienjarige aan die cape argus ter verdediging van af rikaans, in antwoord op 'n ouer afrikaner wat nog nie kans gesien het om hollands vir afrikaans te verruil nie toe leipoldt hom in 1925 as kinderdokter in kaapstad kom vestig, het die opvoedkundige vereniging van die universiteit van kaapstad hom genooi om oor sy verse te kom praat sommer met die intrap het hy ons op loop gehad met 'n bewering wat my later, toe ek hom beter leer ken het, nie so sou geskok het nie die „ seepkissie," het hy gesê, word deur baie mense verkeerd vertolk in werklikheid is dit 'n juigkreet wat hy presies hiermee bedoel het, kan 'n mens maar net gis hy het nooit, vir sover ek weet, later daaroor uitgewei nie so was leipoldt: by elke ontmoeting kon 'n mens die een of ander skokkende bewering te wagte wees niemand het dit meer geniet as hy om 'n gesprek op hierdie manier te verlewendig nie voorbeelde van sy skokmetode is volop, maar dikwels apokrief altans hier te lande iemand wat graag skok, moet ook toon dat hy self nie maklik ge skok kan word nie by een geleentheid in my woonstel terwyl hy na félicien rops se tekeninge in caricatures erotiques (helaas, nie meer in my besit nie!) kom kyk het, moes ek kort kort hoor dat dit alles heel „ordinêr" is maar intussen het hy geen besonderheid laat verbygaan nie die kunsskilder hugo naudé, een van leipoldt se oudste vriende, het hom gevra om na my eerste (ongebundelde) verse te kyk en so het ek een aand na sy kamer gegaan om sy indrukke te kry die kommentaar wat hy gelewer het, was baie algemeen van aard van leipoldt die kritikus kon jy, net soos van leipoldt die mens, enigiets te wagte wees [ ]
