Antique 19th-Century Millstones/Flour Grinding Stones – A Legacy of
South African Africana Heritage, Step back in time with these three authentic Millstones, robust relics from the historic Bo Kouga Mountains on our farm
on the
Western/Eastern Cape Border.
Each Millstone—ranging from approximately 28.5 cm to 37 cm in
diameter—bears the silent testimony of a bygone era, when manual portable wooden
mills
ground flour for sustenance and income in rural South Africa.
Our farm (in the Bo Kouga Mountains) consists of 3 title deeds (hence
the 3 Millstones).
One of the title deeds is known as Dragonder Kraal which takes its
name from the famed regiment of Khoisan Dragoons (a Dragoon is a term
used for horse-back mounted soldiers...Dragonders in Dutch)
established in the 1820s by Lord Charles Somerset along the Western
Cape/Eastern Cape border.
Governor Lord Charles Somerset (who led the Cape Colony from
1814 to 1826) sought to bolster frontier defenses during tense conflicts
with the
Xhosa.
Khoisan Dragoons were valued for their local knowledge, mobility, and
ability to adapt to the challenging terrain of the mountainous border
regions.
Rocky Remnants of the original Dragoon horse stables can
still be seen, quietly preserving the stories of the courageous soldiers
and
the remarkable people who once walked these lands.
Offered as a set of three (or separately) —mirroring the
three separate title deeds of the farm—the three Millstones remain in commendable
condition.
These pieces would make a treasured addition for collectors of
Africana Collectables and/or anyone passionate about South Africa's rich
heritage.
