Soweto is a Johannesburg suburb, rich with South African history. This area, located south of Johannesburg, near the gold mines, was once a separate municipality, but is now part of the Johannesburg metropolitan area.

Soweto was the location of significant protests in 1976, carried on in response to the apartheid government's policy, which enforced education in Afrikaans rather than in English. During the protests, 23 people were killed on the first day, drawing worldwide attention to the area.

A Thriving Suburb

Today, Soweto is quiet with a much better quality of life than in the 1970s. The highway offers easy access to Johannesburg for those who travel into the city for work. In addition, Metrorail has several stops in Soweto and travels into central Johannesburg. There are also restaurants and shops in Soweto, so there is no need to travel to Johannesburg for everything.

A Wide Variety of Housing Available

The traditional matchbox houses that were built by the government and were once the only type of housing available in Soweto are still there, but many have been updated and expanded. In addition, many larger homes have been built. There are quite a few homes in Soweto's great neighbourhoods for raising a family.

Renters can find houses and flats for rent in Soweto that have a wide range of amenities and prices from which to choose. Small houses are still abundant, and make up a large part of the rental market. In addition, former hotels built to house migrant workers have been updated and expanded to create apartment complexes. Many of these are suited to singles and couples.

In addition to apartment complexes, you will find other small apartments and flats for rent in Soweto. Some are offered for rental from individuals, and may be part of larger homes. You will also find townhouses and small garden cottages for rent here. This is one of the best communities near Johannesburg for singles and couples looking for housing. Many of the available houses and flats for rent in Soweto are one or two bedrooms.

Soweto offers plenty of amenities for residents, as well as a reasonable commute into Johannesburg for work. The rental market is thriving and offers a lot of choices to find houses and flats for rent in Soweto.
