Petrified wood is a fossil. It forms when plant material is buried by sediment and protected from decay by oxygen and organisms. Then, groundwater rich in dissolved solids flows through the sediment replacing the original plant material with silica, calcite, pyrite or another inorganic material such as opal.Weight 10kg

We first met jabu nene at the grahamstown organic market we were drawn to the color and unique designs that he has incorporated into his ceramics jabu grew up in soweto, the largest apartheid township outside of johannesburg in 1991 he started attending the art school of soweto in his second year he took his first ceramics class and has been passionate about it ever since after the end of apartheid he was able to attend the school of ceramics in norville where he refined his skills
jabu working on the pottery wheel photo by dora szekely
jabu currently makes bowls, cups, mugs, vases, lamps and candle holders he only uses clay and glazes that are from south africa, most of which are from wadeville the glaze is comprised of natural local ingredients that he mixes with water himself to the correct consistency he creates the pieces in a three step process the first step is to create the basic shape of the piece on a pottery wheel after the piece has dried he sketches out the design which he then carves before firing it the last step is to paint the piece before it is fired for the final time
