“Built by campers for campers†Matamba offers two exclusive upmarket bush campsites. Situated on a beautiful four-hundred hectares private game farm, two and a half hours from Johannesburg and Pretoria. Matamba is ideal as a weekend getaway or as a stopover on the way to Botswana. Tau camp is spread over about four hectares, with the campsites and the facilities connected by paths winding through the open woodland. It has three individual sites; Drongo, Hornbill and Francolin, they are about two-hundred metres apart so are very private. Each site has a fireplace that is supplied with firewood and a tap there is power at the main bathroom and the kitchen with provision for campers to plug in an extension if required.The spacious family bathroom is a thatch building, with existing rocks as the shower floor. Netting windows offer lovely views onto the surrounding bush. Gas geysers at all the units ensure an endless supply of hot water. There is an outside shower and an outside toilet both constructed around existing trees. The kitchen is also thatch with two washing sinks, an info area and a table and chairs for those wishing to swap travelling experiences.Mara’s Camp is a private camp for one group only. It is situated in a lovely thick woodland in the middle of the farm, it is built from natural materials and blends perfectly into the surrounding bush. The two outside family bathrooms are stunningly built around tall trees, each bathroom has a shower with rocks used as the shower floor, a flush toilet and basin. A gas geysers supplies hot water. The wash up area is built into a thicket of trees looking up to zebra plains . There is a large central fireplace and again firewood is supplied. There is no power at this camp.Both campsites are unfenced allowing the game to wander freely through. It is common to find animals in and around the camps.There are three waterholes and a natural spring, Kibu hide is a viewing deck two metres up in a wild Syringa tree, it looks over Zebra plains and a small waterhole. Ndege hide overlooks the spring, it is a thatch building on stilts and is a lovely place to spend a few hours.There is no driving on the farm, but there are over sixty kilometers of sandy tracks to explore either on foot or on a mountain bike. (one needs to be experienced as the sand is thick in places) There are four marked trails, but the whole farm is open to be enjoyed.There is a large variety of plains game on Matamba which are very relaxed and used to people walking, so it is often possible to get very close to them. Birding is also very rewarding with over 200 species recorded. Blakeney is a farm on the edge of the Waterberg, 25 km outside of Lephalale which was formerly known as Ellisras. It is a truly unspoiled wilderness area with high cliffs, the seasonal Tambotie River, shady valleys with huge trees and flat bushveld areas on top of the mountains. The animals you may see vary from warthog and the shy and rarely seen bush pig to the elusive mountain reedbuck, the agile klipspringer, bushbuck, nyala and kudu. Impala, blue wildebeest and zebra are more often seen on the mountain flats. At night and if you are very lucky you may see or hear leopard and brown hyena. Other nocturnal life is also abundant.The camp is a well-renovated old farmhouse at the base of the mountain. It has two outside bedrooms and wonderful outside entertaining areas with fires, a braai area and a pizza oven. The camp doesn’t have electricity, therefore everything runs on gas. The generator will be started for you when necessary but unfortunately not for blow drying your hair. Overnight in en-suite chalets at Tremisana.Day 2: Awaken at sunrise for an exhilarating day of unforgettable bush life. Drive to a remote part of the Balule Game Reserve, where you enjoy a 4-hour Bush Walk. Your experienced field guide will lead you through the bush. The thrill of following Africa’s large animals until you can take a photo will remain with you forever. Adrenalin surges will be acute, notwithstanding the presence of your armed ranger. Return to Tremisana for brunch. At 14h00 we offer high tea. At around 15h00 we go on an afternoon game drive. Transfer to Marc’s Camp where accommodation is in tents equipped with beds and bedding, soap and towels, electric light and fan. Dinner and overnight at Marc’s Camp Day 3: After breakfast you travel on the open-sided Game Viewer to the Orpen Gate of Kruger. The added elevation and absence of windows allow for excellent viewing and photographic opportunities. Your qualified guide will show you various animals, large and small, that frequent this outstanding wildlife paradise. The zone of Kruger you visit has the highest percentage population of giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and impala that attract numerous lions and other predators. Dinner and overnight at Marc’s Camp.Day 4: We enjoy an early morning Bush Walk accompanied by an armed ranger. You will be shown various interesting details of the bush, including insects, spoor and scats. You have an excellent chance of encountering Buffalo, Nyala and other game on foot. After breakfast, we drive to the Three Rondawels of the Blyde River Canyon.
