Antique Pair of Japanese Meiji Period Satsuma VasesJapan, Meiji Period (1868–1912)This fine matched pair of Japanese Satsuma earthenware vases dates to the Meiji period (1868–1912), an era celebrated for the exceptional quality of Japanese ceramics produced for both domestic appreciation and the international export market. Each vase is decorated in the traditional ivory crackle glaze, richly embellished with hand-applied gilt detailing and raised moriage enamels. The principal panels depict elegantly robed court ladies (geisha) playing traditional biwa instruments, framed by symbolic dragon motifs and finely rendered landscapes featuring pagodas, mountains, and cloud forms. The decoration is meticulously executed, with careful attention to facial expression, textile patterning, and relief work, demonstrating the skilled craftsmanship associated with Meiji Satsuma production. The restrained wear to gilding and the even, naturally aged crackle glaze are consistent with pieces of this period.Offered as a true and harmonious pair, these vases represent a highly decorative and collectible example of Meiji-era Satsuma ware, well suited to both private collections and refined interior display.Origin: JapanPeriod: Meiji (1868–1912)Material: Satsuma earthenwareDecoration: Hand-painted enamels, moriage relief, gold gildingCondition: Very good antique condition with light, age-appropriate wearDimensions (each):Height: 19.5 cmWidth: 9 cm × 9 cmCall or WhatsApp Joy 079 161 2266

This vase appears to be a Satsuma-style ceramic piece, likely inspired by traditional Japanese Satsuma pottery. Here are some key features that stand out:
Hand-Painted Scene – The detailed artwork depicts a group of elegantly dressed women in traditional Japanese kimonos, possibly representing geishas or noblewomen, in a peaceful outdoor setting with a mountain in the background.
Gold Accents – The use of gold outlining, especially in the patterns and clothing, is a signature feature of Satsuma-style pottery, which often has rich detailing.
Floral & Decorative Elements – The neck and base of the vase showcase intricate floral motifs, with bold colors and gold embellishments, contributing to its ornate appearance.
Handles & Rim Design – The vase has decorative gold-colored handles shaped like stylized dragons or mythical creatures, which are common in Asian-inspired ceramics. The flared, scalloped rim adds an extra layer of elegance.
Possible Origin – While authentic Satsuma pottery originates from Japan (mainly from the late Edo and Meiji periods), many later pieces, including mid-20th-century export ceramics, were produced in Japan or China in a similar style.
