The Epic Of A People
The Story Of The Jews
by A. Addleson
2nd Printing 1946
"This popularly-written yet comprehensive history is noteworthy for the balance it strikes among the biblical, medieval and modern periods. Following 60 pages descriptive of the Roman rule, the author proceeds to recount all the important intellectual and political achievements and vicissitudes of the Jewish people prom the talmudic period to the development of the great European communities. Thereafter it omits nothing of the later devcelopments in Jewish history, even including mention of the recent war situation and the status of Jewish refugees.Second edition, revised to 1945." From the Preface to the Second Edition - "......Over a million Jews served in the Allied Armies in every sphere of operations, sharing its defeats, its bitter casualties, its victories and its honours, but in the memorable phrase of Pierre van Passen.....the Jews remain still [as] "The Forgotten Ally"....In many lands where the menacing tread of the conqueror has hardly ceased to echo, anti-Semitism once more rears its head. In the lands of the free, Great Britain, the United States, Canada, South Africa, racial incitement against the Jews flaunts itself openly. And what of Palestine, the once promised Homeland of the Jews? .....What of the future? Is statesmanship to prove itself without courage or vision on the Jewish question? Are the Jews in the Diaspora once more to be left to the mercy of minority treaties? Is the promise of a Jewish Homeland to be nullified in the face of power politics? On the answer to these questions depends the fate of what is left of World Jewry.....For in spite of the almost mortal blow that Jews have sustained, there is within Western Jewry, within the Jews of Palestine, and not least within a newly conscious Russian Jewry, the strength to revitalize the Jewish people as a potent factor in the community and comity of nations."

Manya's Story
by Bettyanne Gray
"It was the fall of 1917. Even simple pleasures were difficult to devise with the country engulfed in a world war. With the German invasion of Russia, the whole flow of Manya Polevoi's life was altered." Manya and her family were Russian Jews who lived in a small community, or shtetl, in the Ukraine. The Polevois were well-to-do, but their prosperity was no protection against the hardships caused by the war or the chaos that followed the Bolshevik seizure of power in 1917. In the midst of this political and social turmoil, Manya married and bore a child; the traditional life of the shtetl continued despite the forces threatening its extinction. Then, suddenly and violently, the shtetl and all its inhabitants were swept away by a return of the nightmare that had haunted European Jews for centuries-pogrom, the brutal and unprovoked destruction of Jewish lives and property. The Jews of the Ukraine became helpless victims in a three-sided struggle for power among the Bolshevik Red Army, the anti-Bolshevik White Army, and the forces fighting for Ukrainian independence. Manya and her family suffered outrages at the hands of Ukrainian and White soldiers, and were forced to flee in order to pre- serve their lives. Eventually, Manya's flight brought her to the United States, where she, her husband, and their child found a safe haven and a new existence.
This dramatic account of Manya's ordeal and her deliverance is presented by Bettyanne Gray, Manya's American- born daughter, who has written the story in memory of her valiant mother and of the countless others who lived, and died, in the shtetls of Russia.
Bettyanne Gray has maintained close contact with her Jewish heritage and with the legacy of survival handed down to her by her European forebears. She is actively involved in Jewish educational programs in her native Philadelphia, lecturing and writing articles on such subjects as shtetl life, the Holocaust, and Jewish immigration to the United States. Ms. Gray, her husband, Donald, and their three children have also participated in programs designed to aid recent Jewish immigrants from Russia. The Grays have adopted six Russian Jewish families and have helped them to begin new lives in the United States.

Scorched Earth
Editor
Fransjohan Pretorius
1st Edition 2001
By the end of 1900 both Boer Republics had virtually been defeated by the British army. Pretoria and Bloemfontein were in British hands. For all practical purposes it seemed as if the Anglo-Boer War was over. The guerrilla tactics of the Boers, however, ensured that this was by no means the case. Lord Kitchener had to proceed quickly and vigorously with the scorched earth policy of his predecessor, Lord Roberts, in order to try and bring about the Boers' surrender - a policy that led to the establishment of the con- centration camps and thereby the deaths of many thousands of innocent civilians: the elderly, women and children, white as well as black.
Kitchener's military goal, to force the Boers to a quick surrender, was not achieved. Kitchener later admitted that the exceptionally high number of deaths in the concentration camps impeded his entire campaign.
Scorched Earth examines the leadership of Roberts and Kitchener and the Boer War concentration camps.
Scorched Earth examines the leadership of Roberts and Kitchener and the Boer War concentration camps. To coincide with Herman Binge's TV documentary of the same name, Professor Fransjohan Pretorius and his team of historians present a gripping and deep-reaching account of the camps which were to have such a divisive effect on the subsequent course of South African history:
By the end of the war there were 34 concentration camps for the Boer elderly, women and children, with a total of 110 000 inhabitants. In addition, there were sixty British camps which held 115 000 black people. There were at least 14 000 deaths in these camps. Altogether 27 927 Boers died in the concentration camps, of which 22 000 were under the age of sixteen..
Scorched Earth outlines the background to these camps and gives a clear picture of life in the camps, authenticated by historical documents. Many of the photographs have not previously been published.
This book is indispensable for understanding the trauma of the camps as well as the lingering bitterness it unleashed among generations of South Africans after the War.
