Job Title: Diesel / Plant Mechanic
Job Overview
and Purpose
The Plant/
Truck Mechanic is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and
troubleshooting of all heavy machinery and trucks. This includes heavy
machinery such as trucks, loaders, and excavators, graders, as well as fixed
plant equipment like crushers, including other machinery on site. The
plant mechanic must ensure that the equipment is safe, reliable, and efficient,
minimizing downtime and maximizing productivity. Your
role will include repairs in the workshop as well as attending to breakdowns on
site.
Key
responsibilities include:
·
Inspections and
preventative maintenance:
Conducting
regular inspections of equipment to identify potential issues and performing
routine maintenance tasks like lubrication and belt changes to prevent
breakdowns.
·
Troubleshooting and
repairs:
Diagnosing
faults in machinery, identifying the root cause of problems, and repairing or
replacing faulty components.
·
Record keeping:
Maintaining
accurate records of all maintenance and repair work, including parts used, labour
hours, and equipment condition.
·
Safety:
Follow
all safety procedures and protocols to ensure a safe working environment for
themselves and others.
·
Collaboration:
Working
with other maintenance team members, production staff, and supervisors to
coordinate maintenance activities and prioritize work orders.
The
following are examples (but not limited to) of equipment a Plant Mechanic might
work on.
·
Plant
Dump
trucks, dozers, graders, excavators, tlb’s, payloaders, crushers, milling
machines and other heavy machinery.
·
Trucks:
Tippers, water
tankers, sewer trucks, crane trucks.
·
Trailers
Tipping trailers, lowbed trailers, link
trailers.
Skills
and qualifications:
Trade
certification: (Optional) Typically requires a trade
certificate in Plant Mechanics or a related field. Technical knowledge: Strong
understanding of mechanical, electrical (optional), hydraulic(optional),
and pneumatic systems(optional). Problem-solving: Ability to
diagnose and troubleshoot equipment malfunctions. Communication: Ability to
communicate effectively with team members and supervisors. Physical fitness: Ability to
work in a physically demanding environment, including standing for long
periods, bending, and climbing. Safety awareness: Strong
understanding of safety regulations and procedures.
