Reputation and Performance
The lens earned its "bokeh monster" nickname due to the quality of its out-of-focus areas, or bokeh.
Smooth Bokeh: The primary appeal of the 15-blade version is that its diaphragm remains nearly circular even when stopped down, resulting in exceptionally smooth, creamy, and round background highlights (bokeh balls). The 6-blade versions produce hexagonal shapes when stopped down, a less desirable effect for those seeking the "monster" bokeh.
Image Quality: Reviewers note that the lens is respectably sharp, especially from f/5.6 onwards, and delivers good color rendition. It is often described as sharp enough at its maximum aperture of f/2.8 for portraits.
Character and Flaws: The lens is appreciated for its distinct "vintage feel" and character. Common issues include strong color fringing and chromatic aberration in high-contrast lighting situations, as well as susceptibility to flare, which can often be corrected in post-processing. The long focus throw allows for precise manual focus but can make focusing on moving subjects difficult.
