Sarah Stickney Ellis, 1812-1872
Sarah Ellis was famous for writing a widely read series of improving books for women, beginning with The Women of England in 1839.
Like Hannah More a generation earlier, Sarah Ellis argued that it was the religious duty of women, as daughters, wives, and mothers, to provide the influence for good that would improve society. This claim appeared frequently in literature of the early Victorian period, and allowed women to assert a special role in shaping the moral character and destiny of the English nation.

Leverage is an exciting board game of strategy with a unique action feature; it includes various weighted pieces and is built around universal laws of balance and force. Leverage has been hailed as a favorite of GAMES MAGAZINE in 4 different years.
Rules and game pieces are simple and easy to understand, yet tactics and strategy can be as sophisticated and challenging as the players themselves. Two opposing strategies (speed & sacrifice vs. conservation & mass force) provide intrigue and depth, as either may be merged into the other as the game unfolds.
Constant action potential -- Jump, capture, sacrifice, block; and, the players may rock the board at any time to see how the leverage advantage is changing.
Suspense -- The board always stabilizes at a level position until a move is made that tilts it down to rest at one end; there is no halfway tilt! When the board tilts down, scoring pegs are removed until it returns to level.
The winner is (1) the one who tilts the board down towards his opponent when the opponent has no scoring pegs left to remove, or (2) the one who moves all of his remaining playing pieces into the opposite Safety Zone while having more or an equal number of scoring pegs than his opponent.

Jewish Memories of Mandela
South African Jewish Board of Deputies
1st Edition 2011
Nelson Mandela's legal and political work brought him into contact with a vast array of Jewish people across the spectrum: lawyers and legal clerks, communists and communal leaders, business leaders and bankers, physicians and philanthropists, rabbis and rabble-rousers. Jewish memories of Mandela – chronicles for the first time the extent to which individual Jewish men and women were involved in the life and career of Nelson Mandela. It also records the remarkable extent to which Jewish South Africans participated in the anti-apartheid struggle, as well as in the post-apartheid era of nation building, reconstruction and reconciliation. Jews, notwithstanding that they constituted small minority within the population, have been involved to a remarkably disproportionate extent in Mandela's life history, and indeed in the broader struggle for democracy in South Africa. Whether as lawyers, political activists, trade unionists, journalists, parliamentarians or business leaders, Jews have been intricately involved in the Mandela story, from his arrival in Johannesburg as a young man onwards. Many have themselves become famous names in the annals of South African history. They include Helen Suzman, Joe Slovo, Ali Bacher, Tony Leon, Rusty Bernstein, Arthur Goldreich, Sol Kerzner, Ruth First, Gill Marcus, Albie Sachs and Arthur Chaskalson. The book also tells the stories of Mandela’s remarkable interaction with ordinary people, from the boy in 1996 who insisted on inviting the President to his Barmitzvah (he came, and danced) and a conversation with a ten-year-old with presidential ambitions. Jewish memories of Mandela interweaves into the central narrative the personal recollections of these Jewish South Africans of their association with Mandela. These throw interesting new light on some of the most significant episodes in modern South African history, such as the Treason Trial, the establishment of Umkhonto we Sizwe, the Liliesleaf Farm police raid and ensuing Rivonia Trial and the long imprisonment of Mandela and other political activists. It further shows how the Jewish communal leadership, including the SA Jewish Board of Deputies and Chief Rabbi Cyril Harris, went about leading the Jewish community in being an active part in the process of transition to multiracial democracy after 1990. The role of Jewish business leaders in post-apartheid reconstruction initiatives is also examined. The book is a noteworthy addition to the historiography of anti-apartheid activism from within the white community, of which Jews formed a part.

The Practical Cookery Book
For South Africa
22nd Edition 1947
by S. Van H. Tulleken
It is a great pleasure to me to write the Preface of this book. I have known the writer for many years, and I know how well she can cook and how we always held her up as an example to follow.
At the time when she exhibited at shows it was not necessary to point out her exhibits, as they always shone out above the rest.
More than once I got hints from her myself, and was really pleased to learn that she was going to publish a cookery book. When the first edition appeared I at once got some copies to present to friends. Two of these were newly married, and they told me since that they find the recipes so good and so easy to follow, and what they like the most is that the recipes are so economical and do not require a full purse to carry out; that indeed is a great advantage. especially so in these depressed times, when most people have to turn over a sixpence several times before spending it.
I am pleased that another edition has appeared, and I can frankly recommend this cookery book to all. I hope that everybody will buy a copy, knowing that they will draw wisdom from it, and that no one will be disappointed. There is a great variety of every dish in it, and Mrs. Van Tulleken has tested them all herself before placing them in the book.
I wish Mrs. Van Tulleken all success, and hope that the welcome given to this book will be so warm that it will encourage her to let us have something more from her pen later on.
ISIE K. SMUTS.

The Globe For The Space Age
by S. Carl Hirsch
Illustrated by Burt Silverman
1st Edition 1963
Winner of the 1963 Edison Award for the Best Children's Science Book
Centuries ago, on any voyage in uncharted seas, the great explorers always had an elaborate globe on board their sailing ships. Today a small, lighted globe accompanies the astronauts in their space capsules.
Here is the exciting story of how this miniature model of the earth, after being out of active duty in exploration for two hundred years, has once again become an important instrument for navigation this time in outer space. It traces the history of globe-making-from the first crude model, made in 150 n.c. by a bold Greek scholar named Crates, to the highly accu- rate globes required in the space program. Along the way many interesting things are disclosed: why a flat map gives a distorted picture of the earth; why the arctic polar cap is now a gateway to air travel; how longitude and latitude serve as "street signs" of the globe; how the tilt of the earth's axis dictates our seasons; how to tell time around the world; the reasons for good weather and bad; the origin of odd place names; and how satellites are helping man to determine the true shape of his own planet.
Written in a delightfully refreshing manner, the book brings into focus the significance of the globe as a fascinating tool for anyone who wants to follow and enjoy the amazing events of the Space Age.
Burt Silverman's beautiful two-color drawings enhance the lucid text.
"Included are discussions on such subjects as the origin of the earth and the solar system, the moon, the interior of the earth, the origin of life, organic evolution, and ... some interesting predictions on the future of the earth.... It is all extremely well written at the level of the general reader. Highly recommended." - Library Journal
