The Lost Messiah
by John Freely
1st Edition 2001
The astonishing story of Sabbatai Sevi, whose messianic movement emerged from the mysticism of the Kabbalah
THE LOST MESSIAH is the astonishing story of Sabbatai Sevi, a seventeenth-century rabbi who through the mysticism of the Kabbalah convinced vast numbers of Jews throughout Europe, the Middle East and North Africa that he was the long-awaited Messiah. Many of his followers were disappointed when he embraced Islam on threat of execution from the Turkish Sultan, but many others continued to believe in him. Some of them even converted to Islam themselves, creating the sect known as the Dönme - outwardly Muslim, yet clinging secretly to Judaism. Today, a few Sabbatians still secretly hold true to their beliefs, patiently waiting for their Messiah to return and lead them to redemption; they believe that Sabbatai is not dead but merely hidden from human view, despite more than three centuries having passed since he was last seen.
When John Freely came across the name of Sabbatai Sevi in an old Jewish bookshop in Istanbul, he was instantly fascinated by the story and journeyed to Izmir, the principal Aegean port of Turkey and Sabbatai's first home. Brilliantly evoking the vanished world of the seventeenth-century Jewish diaspora in the Ottoman Empire, his narrative moves to the ghettos of Venice and Rome, the bazaars of Cairo, and the rabbinical schools of Jerusalem and Safed. Ranging from the Sultan's palaces in Istanbul to the synagogues of North Africa and out to the isolated Jewish communities of the Yemen and the remote reaches of Albania, Freely's remarkable story takes us deep into the esoteric world of Jewish mysticism and the messianic cult which still inspires belief today.
JOHN FREELY was born in New York in 1926. He joined the US Navy at the age of seventeen and served with a commando unit in Burma and China during the last months of the Second World War. He received a Ph.D. in physics from New York University in 1960, and he has lived in New York, Boston, London, Athens, Istanbul and Venice. His first book was Strolling Through Istanbul (1971, with Hilary Sumner-Boyd). Since then he has written over twenty books, including Classical Turkey, Strolling Through Athens, Strolling Through Venice, Istanbul: The Imperial City and most recently Inside the Seraglio: Private Lives of the Sultans in Istanbul.

Wheels of a Soul
Reincarnation And Kabbalah
by Rav P. S. Berg
THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A MORE IMPORTANT BOOK THAN WHEELS OF A SOUL...
Throughout history, humankind has struggled with certain deeply troubling questions:
* If God is just, why does fortune often seem to favor those who least deserve it?
* If God is good, why are some of the best people afflicted with poverty, illness, and even untimely death?
* If God is all-powerful, why does He allow evil to persist in the world?
In Wheels of a Soul, Kabbalist Rav Berg reveals the keys to answering these and many more questions that lie at the heart of our existence as human beings. Specifically, Rav Berg explains why we must acknowledge and explore the lives we have already lived in order to understand the life we are living today...
Make no mistake: you have been here before. Reincarnation is a fact -- and just as science is now beginning to recognize that time and space may be nothing but illusions, Rav Berg shows why death itself is the greatest illusion of all.
In this book you learn much more than the answers to these questions. You will understand your true purpose in the world and discover tools to identify your life's soul mate. Read Wheels of a Soul and let one of the greatest Kabbalistic masters of our time change your life forever.
The concept of reincarnation is one of the foundations of human consciousness. From time immemorial, every culture has recognized, explored, and celebrated the notion that life does not simply come to a halt when the heart stops beating. With the rise of materialist science, how- ever, this ancient wisdom was brought under attack. After all, what material proof was there that souls returned to the world after death? And if there was no proof, there was no possibility.
But now-by combing the latest findings of physics, cosmology, and molecular biology with the timeless wisdom of Kabbalah-Kabbalist Rav Berg shows why reincarnation is not just a possibility, but an absolute certainty for anyone who has real desire to see the truth. And the impli- cations of this discovery are literally earthshaking.
After all, once you grasp the fact that you have been here before - not just once, but many times you must ask, "For what purpose is the wheel of my soul continually revolving? Toward what goal is the wheel carrying me, and what can I do to reach that goal sooner rather than later?" By showing that your ultimate destiny is joy and fulfillment without limit, Rav Berg answers those questions once and for all. Wheels of a Soul is both up-to-the-minute science and truly timeless wisdom. The way you look at your life-and the way you live it-will change forever.
Kabbalist Rav Berg was born in the Williamsburg section of New York City into a family with a long rabbinical tradition.

Twilight
by Elie Wiesel
1st Edition 1988
Twilight, Elie Wiesel's first book since receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, and his most ambitious novel in many years, casts us into a world of harrowing visions and mystical truths. A best- seller in France, it has been called "inspired," "electrifying" and "beautiful."
Raphael Lipkin has been searching for Pedro ever since his strange disappearance soon after the war. Who is Pedro? Where did he come from? And why has he become the central obsession of Raphael's life? These questions and oth- ers continue to haunt Raphael decades after their separation, and explain his circumstances at the Mountain Clinic, an unusual institution in upstate New York, specializing in patients whose delusions spring from the Bible. At the clinic, Raphael is drawn into the delirious realm of men who believe they are Cain and Abraham, Joseph, and even the Messiah. And as he encounters these characters, Raphael is forced to confront his past in Rovidok, the quiet Carpathian town where he grew up.
There are stories within stories: of love and politics in Lvov, of birds and hunger in Lodz, of romance and torture in Hungary, of witnessing
the destruction of Jerusalem far away from Jeru- salem. Stories that transport us from Eastern Europe to postwar Paris and Berlin and finally to New York are all masterfully woven into a tapes- try of Hasidic tales, Talmudic sayings, and messi- anic dreams that link the living and the dead.
A novel that resonates with the dramatic upheaval of this century, Twilight is ultimately about survival and fear, hope and redemption, and, above all, friendship.
Elie Wiesel received the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, Norway, on December 10, 1986. His Nobel citation reads: "Wiesel is a messenger to mankind. His message is one of peace and atone- ment and human dignity. The message is in the form of a testimony, repeated and deepened through the works of a great author." He is Andrew Mellon Professor in the Humanities at Boston University and the author of more than thirty books. Mr. Wiesel lives in New York City with his family.
