Amusing journalism across turbulent African states during the 1970's and 1980's. It
is full of anecdotal stories eg: "back in the day, Gaberones had 2
hotels: the "Grande" which wasn't and the "Tati" which was. Or
how a guy parked his car, went hunting in the bush and returned to the
car a few days later. He found an African guy had kindly waited 2 days
to advise the Union Flag was hanging upside down on the car bonnet. As
an ex-soldier, the African guy knew the penalty for hanging the flag
upside down. In Kampala, a Welsh journalist rang his wife to relay news
for a newspaper. He was interrupted by secret agents who insisted he
must speak his native tongue. The journalist tried to explain his native
language was Welsh Gaelic.
