The Art of Maurice Sendak
by Selma G. Lanes
Creator of Where the Wild Things Are, In the Night Kitchen, Higglety Pigglety Pop!, and the illustrations for many other memorable children's books, Maurice Sendak ranks among the best-known, best-loved artists of today. For nearly thirty years, he has spoken to the child-mind in young and adult alike. He is winner of both the Hans Christian Andersen Medal (the highest international honour in the field of children's book illustration) and the Caldecott Medal (awarded annually by the American Library Association).
Sendak's life and work are explored in affectionate detail in this book, which is illustrated with drawings, paintings and photographs, 94 of them in full colour and over 165 in black and white. Selma Lanes, editor and critic of children's books, has drawn upon many conversations with the artist over the last decade as well as three years of formal research and interview for the compilation of this picture biography. Easy and intimate, the text is enhanced by words from Sendak himself, who cooperated fully in the book's preparation.
The illustrations include a full-colour facsimile of the tiny mock-up that Sendak first made for the story that would later become Where the Wild Things Are. In addition, there are three full-colour fold-outs of illustrations from Sendak's books as they have never been seen before.
Here is a unique world of the imagination, from the line drawings of A Hole Is to Dig-Sendak's first major profes- sional assignment-to sketches for his latest picture book fantasy and recent designs for opera sets and animated films. The book also includes a generous selection of Sendak's early sketches and dummies for all his important works-small- scale renderings that trace the meticulous, creative process he undergoes with each book. These provide an insight into the e artist's mind as well as fascinating glimpses of his extraordi- narily varied technique.
This book covers the work-both published and heretofore unpublished-of Sendak's career to date. It is the first major retrospective study of the most important children's book illustrator of our time.

Studio Encounters
by Neville Jones
1st Edition 1963
Some Reminiscences Of A Portrait Painter
with a preliminary sketch by Anthony R. Delius
Kings, revolutionaries, sportsmen and artists jostle one another in a 20th-century pageant in these reminiscences of South Africa's leading portrait-painter. Such various dramtis personae as Churchill, the King of Spain, Montgomery, Solly Joel, Smuts, Luthuli, pose and reveal themselves in these pages - even Lenin might have been here but for a too sus- picious mind. Forgotten one-time celebrities, people of enduring fame, men in the street, and men in high places, pass under the artist's bright, shrewd, and always challenging gaze. Even heroes don't escape his aseptic inquiry.
Neville Lewis wanders from the drawing-rooms and salons of the rich and powerful to huts of hardly known Xhosa tribes. America, Britain, Spain, Africa, are his stamping- grounds. His subject is man in all his conditions, from soldiers in the trenches of World War I - he was one of them to children of well-to- do parents. War and Peace are his environment. Out of his rich life and background comes a stream of running commentary, electrifying anecdote and very personal opinion- that will delight, amuse, startle and infuriate readers in all categories.

The Garden of Education
Education with Love
by Rabbi Shalom Arush
Translated by Rabbi Lazer Brody
Children are life: As soon as a person has a child, he or she earns the title of parent, faced with the task of guiding the child along life's best path. As a parent, life takes on a brand new meaning. When a person has children, he in effect lives forever, since they are his continuance and legacy in the world.
Children are livelihood: Perhaps a parent deserves a life of dire poverty. However, the little soul that a mother and father helped bring down into the world deserves to live in opulence. As such, the parents will enjoy an abundance of income by virtue of their child. Children are joy: Every new word that a baby says, every new action and every new development are reasons for parents to celebrate. Even as they grow, children grant their parents limitless joy.

Bringing Heaven Down To Earth
365 Meditations
from the wisdom of the Rebbe
Menachem Mendel Schneerson
compiled & interpreted by Tzvi Freeman
4th Printing
Revised Edition
"Bringing Heaven Down to Earth is a masterpiece -- the kind of book that lodges itself in your consciousness and keeps resonating. Freeman's brilliance lies in his making the Rebbe's words and thoughts accessible to a wide, wide audience without compromising on their essence and profundity. Readers won't be able to put it down, and when they do, they will have a radically altered view of spirituality, Torah, the Rebbe and most importantly, how it all relates to their life." - Rivka Slonim, author, Total Immersion
"This is the most wonderful thing I've ever read on mystic Judaism. The Rebbe presents a wisdom and light for every reader, Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Buddhist or otherwise." - Wulfing von Rohr, author of over 50 books on metaphysics in Germany, including 100 Masters for the Modern Day
"...filled with touching truths, inspiring ideas, and moving reminders that the life worth living is such because it is spent walking with Hashem." - "Dr. Laura", author, How Could You Do That?!
"Freeman preserves the spirit of the Rebbe's wisdom without compromising the integrity." - Simon Jacobson, author, Towards a Meaningful Life
"All of Santa Fe is abuzz! Whenever someone calls with a problem, I tell them to pick a number from 1 to 365 and then read them what the book says. I've never had anybody who didn't say, "That's exactly what I needed to hear!." - Sunny Ariel, author, Chicken Soup Sorceress
"I take it with me wherever I go. I look in it daily for advice and guidance." - Zelda Young on the Zelda daily radio show, Toronto/ Vancouver/Florida
Tzvi Freeman was born in Vancouver, Canada, where he became involved at an early age in Yoga, Tao and radical politics. In 1975, he left a career as an accomplished classical guitarist and composer to learn the ways of the Talmud and Jewish mysticism for nine years in the Rebbe's yeshivas. While there, he was one of the forming members of the Baal Shem Tov Band, an original synthesis of chassidic soul and song with American hard rock.
Since receiving his rabbinical ordination and completing post-graduate studies at the Rabbinical College of Canada, Tzvi has resided in Vancouver with his wife, Naomi Polichenco, and their children.
Rabbi Freeman is well known to net-surfers for his controversial essays on Judaism and the New Spirituality, as well as for his leading-edge articles on Multimedia Design. He is also an award winning designer of children's software.
Rabbi Freeman presently lectures at the University of British Columbia on Multimedia Design and Human Interface.

The First Ten Penguins
Republished in facsimile to mark Penguin's fiftieth anniversary
Complete Unabridged
* Box shows wear, all books new & unread
The first ten Penguin's 50th anniversary 1985 set with facsimile covers
To mark the fiftieth anniversary of Penguin Books in July 1985 a boxed set of facsimiles of the first ten titles published has been produced in a unique edition with a limited printing.
When Allen Lane selected these titles in 1935 he had in mind a new reading public, one which could not afford the standard charge of seven or eight shillings and sixpence, but had hitherto borrowed books from the 'tuppenny library', or read only newspapers and magazines. Unlike the many other publishers of 'cheap reprints' he chose living writers of quality for his sixpenny series, and asked himself, "Is this a book which, had I not read it and should I have seen it on sale at sixpence, would make me say. "That is a book! have always meant to read: I will buy it now"?"
Perhaps even more importantly, Allen Lane was determined that these inexpensive books should be available not just in 'empty book- shops with two or three assistants lying in wait behind the shelves', but at newsagents, railway stations and chain stores such as Wool- worth's (known then as the 3d and 6d store).
The first eighty Penguins appeared under the famous Bodley Head imprint. But as the Great Depression of the 1930s continued to undermine traditional publishing Allen Lane realized that the con- tinued success of his Penguins depended on creating a company geared to mass-producing and distributing titles that this 'new read- ing public' wanted to buy. Five months after the publication of the first ten Penguins over a million books had been sold. This extra- ordinary public endorsement of his enterprise persuaded him to set up independently of The Bodley Head, and in January 1936 Penguin Books became a publishing house in its own name.
Penguin has grown from strength to strength over the last five decades and has, we believe, worked well within the principles set down by its founder, accommodating itself each decade to the new requirements of publishing reality. In more recent years Penguin has greatly expanded in many directions, producing adult and children's paperbacks in a variety of formats and even fostering its own hard- back imprints, Viking and Viking Kestrel.
Although the Penguin revolution began in England, the company's scope is now truly international, with books being published in the five countries in which Penguin has a presence.
(The quotations are from Allen Lane's article 'All About Penguin Books', The Bookseller, 22 May 1935.)

1. Ariel by Andre Maurois
2. A Farewell To Arms by Ernest Hemingway
3. Poet's Pub by Eric Linklater

MOSAIC
A Chronicle Of Five Generations
by Diane Armstrong
For centuries Poland has been a battleground whose fields, watered by more blood than rain, have nurtured ancient hatreds... I look back at the leafy street where the synagogue and mikveh stood, just a short stroll from the house on Parkowa Street. If I close my eyes, I can see a dapper white- haired gentleman in top hat and patent leather shoes like mirrors striding ahead of his wife in a flowered hat with feathers, her long full skirt rustling as she tries to keep up with him as they walk to the synagogue on Kilinskiego Street for the marriage of their daughter Lieba to Daniel Baldinger...
This remarkable true story begins in the Polish city of Krakow in 1890 and spans one hundred years and four continents. God blessed Lieba and the devout Jewish patriarch Daniel Baldinger with eleven children, and this richly textured portrait follows their lives down the decades, through the terrifying years of the Holocaust, to the present time. Lives that personify the struggles and hopes of our century.
Mosaic is compelling storytelling at its best: from the fascinating detail of Polish-Jewish culture and the rivalries and dramas of family life, to its moving account of lives torn apart by war and persecution, this is an extraordinary story of a family, and of one woman's journey to reclaim her heritage.

The Children's Bible In Colour
The Old Testament and the New Testament
Paul Hamlyn
1st Edition
6th Impression 1968
All the poetry and original beauty of the Bible has been preserved in this version for children -- the words here have a simplicity which is timeless, a directness which makes the meaning immediately clear, and the same magic which has held the world for over a thousand years.
The Bible is a collection of stories and poems which were written by many authors in many places at widely different times. Like all stories these are alive with all sorts and kinds of characters and heroes some of them saints some of them ordinary people, some kind, some cruel, some weak, some strong. The have brilliant settings, and a strength and vitality on is just as exciting now as when they were first written. They are a permanent record of God's dealings with men since the creation of the world, and together they form the history and fabric of the Christian Faith.
Many sensitive and colourful illustrations bring these stories to life in a wonderful way which will fascinate even the youngest reader, making this a Bible to treasure all the way through the years of childhood.
