Georgia o' keeffe
by nancy frazier
with 70 full colour and 15 black and white illustrations
using nature as her inspiration, georgia o' keeffe developed a highly visible, per sonal, and monumental style without parallel in american painting perhaps more symbolic than abstract, o' keeffe's paintings of simplified, enlarged and iso lated natural forms expressed the spiritu ality of nature, and of the artist herself recognized as one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century georgia o' keeffe created paintings that had a powerful effect on other artists and on the public yet the more the public came to love her work, the more controversial o' keeffe became ironically, the popularity of her works and her own personal image as an eccentric have sometimes worked to blur her importance as an artistic innovator
born in wisconsin in 1887, o' keeffe knew she would be an artist by the time she was 12 she studied at the art institute of chicago and at the art students league in new york city in new york she met photographer alfred stieglitz, whom she married in 1924 stieglitz exhibited her paintings in his new york gallery, where they caused ripples of excitement and scandal as o' keeffe's reputation grew, she struggled to maintain an independent mind and fresh artistic perspective she dressed only in black and white, but in her work she seemed to invent color as a contempo rary artist remarked, " in her canvases each color almost regains the fun it must have felt within itself on forming the first rainbow "
in the late 1920s o' keeffe began to spend time in the southwest, and after her husband's death in 1946 she moved permanently to new mexico it was in the southwest that she began to make visible the concept that art and one's senses are inseparable for o' keeffe, sensuality was realized in the stark design of her floral forms and other natural elements that overwhelmed the space of her canvases probably most like a trademark were her paintings of animal skulls, done without morbidity, but with a symmetrical grace expressive of their affinity with the eternal
with an insightful text accompanying a portfolio of her finest works in full color, this book captures the haunting, sometimes overwhelming quality of georgia o' keeffe's unique vision
n a n c y f r a z i e r, who graduated from sarah lawrence college, spent her junior year in paris visiting museums and studying art history her early profes sional life was in magazine journalism, first at newsweek and then as the found ing editor of a weekly feature magazine, hampshire life
in 1985 nancy frazier's book, special museums of the northeast, was published since then she has edited a museum goers newsletter, museum insights, issued six times a year, which specializes in find ing small museums with exceptional col lections across north america
recently, to combine her interests in art and writing, ms frazier returned to school and is currently enrolled as a graduate student in art history at the university of massachusetts in amherst in this book about georgia o' keeffe, ms frazier explores the fascination of the artist as innovator and as an american icon

The Lost Messiah
by John Freely
1st Edition 2001
The astonishing story of Sabbatai Sevi, whose messianic movement emerged from the mysticism of the Kabbalah
THE LOST MESSIAH is the astonishing story of Sabbatai Sevi, a seventeenth-century rabbi who through the mysticism of the Kabbalah convinced vast numbers of Jews throughout Europe, the Middle East and North Africa that he was the long-awaited Messiah. Many of his followers were disappointed when he embraced Islam on threat of execution from the Turkish Sultan, but many others continued to believe in him. Some of them even converted to Islam themselves, creating the sect known as the Dönme - outwardly Muslim, yet clinging secretly to Judaism. Today, a few Sabbatians still secretly hold true to their beliefs, patiently waiting for their Messiah to return and lead them to redemption; they believe that Sabbatai is not dead but merely hidden from human view, despite more than three centuries having passed since he was last seen.
When John Freely came across the name of Sabbatai Sevi in an old Jewish bookshop in Istanbul, he was instantly fascinated by the story and journeyed to Izmir, the principal Aegean port of Turkey and Sabbatai's first home. Brilliantly evoking the vanished world of the seventeenth-century Jewish diaspora in the Ottoman Empire, his narrative moves to the ghettos of Venice and Rome, the bazaars of Cairo, and the rabbinical schools of Jerusalem and Safed. Ranging from the Sultan's palaces in Istanbul to the synagogues of North Africa and out to the isolated Jewish communities of the Yemen and the remote reaches of Albania, Freely's remarkable story takes us deep into the esoteric world of Jewish mysticism and the messianic cult which still inspires belief today.
JOHN FREELY was born in New York in 1926. He joined the US Navy at the age of seventeen and served with a commando unit in Burma and China during the last months of the Second World War. He received a Ph.D. in physics from New York University in 1960, and he has lived in New York, Boston, London, Athens, Istanbul and Venice. His first book was Strolling Through Istanbul (1971, with Hilary Sumner-Boyd). Since then he has written over twenty books, including Classical Turkey, Strolling Through Athens, Strolling Through Venice, Istanbul: The Imperial City and most recently Inside the Seraglio: Private Lives of the Sultans in Istanbul.

Transvaal Wild Flowers
Paintings by Anita Fabian
Text by Gerrit Germishuizen
1st Edition 1982
In Transvaal Wild Flowers Anita Fabian's paintings present an extensive array of some of the diverse flora of the Transvaal, and are designed to help the wild-flower enthusiast to identify the plants that are most readily to be found in the veld. Representatives from 87 families are illustrated, from the smallest herbs through bulbous plants and shrubs to flowering trees. Some of the plants shown are common, some are rare, and a few are newly discovered species, all accurately portrayed in the exquisite medium of watercolour.
The book covers a great variety of Transvaal wild plants, illustrating more than 700 species of over 400 different genera, grouped on 134 full-colour plates and arranged in standard botanical sequence. An important advantage of the format is that the descriptive text and distribution details for each species fall opposite its illustration, which makes for easy reference. Mr Germishuizen intro- duces each family with a brief description and information on its status in a world context, and the medicinal and herbal uses of the plants are given where these are known. The species' descriptions are concise and simply expressed, and there is a comprehensive glossary for the botanical terms used.
An unusual feature of the text is the inclusion of the derivation of each plant's botanical name, which sometimes honours a botanist or early plant-collector, or relates to a particular characteristic of the plant. This adds interest and definition to the internationally accepted names.
This book is an invaluable source of reference for any nature-lover, a welcome addition to botanical literature and a work of art in its own right.
ANITA FABIAN was born and brought up in the Karoo, where her early interest in plant life was first encouraged by her mother and she began to paint the flowers that she found in the veld. She went on to train at the Michaelis School of Fine Art in Cape Town and was invited to submit work for an international exhibition of botanical illustrations held in South Africa in 1975, and later had a one-man show of her botanical paintings and other work. She and her husband live on the outskirts of Johannesburg in an area of indigenous bush, which provides her with a great deal of the material for her paintings. The Fabians spend all available spare time exploring out-of-the-way places, and it was the discovery of many unusual and intri- guing plants that prompted Mrs Fabian to gather and paint specimens for a book. Transvaal Wild Flowers is the realisation of a project that has taken more than six years to complete.

A History of Jews and Yale
by Dan A. Oren
Second Edition
This unique and richly informative addition to American educational, religious, and cultural history examines the college life of Jews at Yale from the first Jewish graduate in 1809 to the present time, drawing comparisons to the Jewish experience at other elite colleges and universities and to the experiences of other minorities at Yale. In this revised edition, Oren draws on new interviews and references to present the dramatic events of the past twenty years, describing the tensions between majority and minority cultures in an academic world increasingly committed to inclusiveness and the solidification of meritocracy.
Reviews of the earlier edition
“An admirably probing and balanced account of a subject that was up to now considered taboo.” - Lewis Coser
“Dan A. Oren’s meticulous research reveals how the traditional exclusivist conception of Yale University evolved gradually over time, and with what consequences for Jews and other original outsiders. . . . Judicious in tone, balanced and fluently written.” - A.J. Sherman, Times Literary Supplement
“A richly researched and well-written book.” - Naomi W. Cohen, American Historical Review
“A most complete, thoroughly researched, and well documented history.” - Melvin Ezer, Educational Studies
Dan A. Oren, M.D., is associate professor of psychiatry at the Yale University School of Medicine.

Making Ideas Happen
by Scott Belsky
Founder & CEO Of Behance
Overcoming The Obstacles Between Vision & Reality
"Should you buy a book that will make you uncomfortable?
More questions: Why is it so difficult to ship good ideas out the door? Why do committees show up and wreck the purity of your idea? Why do people avoid doing the hard work of actually bringing their work to the market?
I'll tell you why: Because it's safe. Ideas that never ship are never criticized. Faceless committees accept the blame for tepid products that were probably better off in the warehouse. And managers in search of a place to hide can best hide behind the unshipped product, the unrealized idea and the system gone wrong.
Scott Belsky has your number. He's seen it all before. He knows your excuses, he's seen your shtick and he knows all the ways to avoid doing the work.In this book, Scott'It's not giving you any place to hide.
there. Do you still want to read his book by him?
"If you care about your art, your job, or your market, you really have no choice. This is strategy and tactics, concepts and how-to, all in one on a topic that's often overlooked." - Seth Godin, Author, Linchpin
"Ideas are easy. Implementation is hard. This book helps you with the hard part." - Guy Kawasaki, Co-founder of Alltop and former chief evangelist of Apple
"Making Ideas Happen is timely and vital to a new generation of creative leaders. Ideas are important, but executing on those ideas is the crucial component that so many of us forget about. Great execution is rare, and Belsky lays out practical principles and a clear plan for getting things done. I highly recommend this book!"
- Brad Lomenick, Executive Director, Catalyst
"From his years spent understanding how the most productive entrepreneurs and creative minds operate, Scott Belsky provides a compendium of the knowledge one needs to turn a great idea into something tangible. This is a book about execution, and when it comes to going from idea to a real business, execution is everything." - John Battelle, Co-founder of Wired and Boing Boing, founder of Federated Media
"If your creative team or organization struggles to implement their best ideas, or if you find that your own creative projects languish unfinished, you need Making Ideas Happen." - Teresa Amabile, Prof. of Business Administration, Director of Research, Harvard Business School

My Covenant
The Honorary Jew
Geoffrey Modise Menachem Ramokgadi
Written by Suzanne Belling
This is a tale of a truly extraordinary life of a struggle, achievement and love of people of honorary Jew Geoff Ramokgadi. He has been the champion of the Jewish people, all his life. Born into a poor family in the town of Rustenburg, South Africa, Geoff Ramokgadi left school at the age of 13 to embark on a music career, gaining a national reputation as a lead singer in the first multi-racial band at the height of the apartheid regime.
He showed extraordinary talent as a vocalist and musician and played with many international musicians and singers. He was also a creative and talented window dresser and designer.
Though leaving school early, Geoff made a covenant with his grandmother and his Creator that one day he would make a contribution to education.
Music and love led him into Swaziland, where he married the regal (and royal) Dudu, settling in Mbabane, where he put his design and business talents to good use, from royal palaces to construction.
It was Geoff's vocation that called him into unusual territory, two different areas in which he has made a significant mark. He established a private school in Swaziland; and his beliefs moved him towards Judaism. His leadership towards the Jewish community as chairman of the Swaziland Jewish community and as a vice-president of the African Jewish Congress led him to travel the world for meetings of the World Jewish Congress.
His entrepreneurial qualities led to the founding of the renowned Kobe-Ramokgadi High School in Ezulwini, while his integrity, drive and personality made him a sought-after delegate to meetings on an international scale.
He is widely-known beyond his leadership and drive in making significant contributions to Swaziland and the Jewish world. He has earned respect and affection in every area of his life and endeavours, Now, for the first time, his full and fascinating story is told.
