Defending The Human Spirit
Jewish Law's Vision For A Moral Society
by Rabbi Warren Goldstein
Chief Rabbi Of South Africa
For over three thousand years, Jewish law has been defending the human spirit from abuse by the powerful. This book's wide-ranging approach looks at Jewish law's proud record on a number of major human rights issues, from political tyranny to oppression of women to crime and poverty, demonstrating unique Torah insights for Western law and the modern world. Written by the new chief rabbi of South Africa, Rabbi Warren Goldstein, Ph.D., Defending the Human Spirit discusses Jewish law's vision for a moral society in the context of real cases and not merely as abstract principles. Western law systems, specifically those of England, the United States and South Africa, are compared and contrasted with the Jewish legal system, showing that Divine and Divinely based Jewish law- Halachah- has always been ahead of its time in the arena of human rights- with Western law systems only just catching up in modern times. Readers will see how Jewish law weaves together the minuiae of detailed laws and the broader principles on which they are based to form a magnificent tapestry, through which society is transformed. Lawyers, law students, and all interested readers will discover the uniqueness of Judaism's approach to both law and ethics- how they are blended together to form the best possible system within which the human race can fully develop into the image of God. The Story Of Israel
by Martin Gilbert
This book contains rare removable facsimile documents of historic importance
A leading historian, and Winston Churchill’s official biographer, tells the complete story of Israel’s birth and development as a nation.
Just over 100 years ago, Theodor Herzl launched the Zionist movement. Fifty years later, after the Holocaust, the State of Israel came into being, established so that Jews anywhere in the world could have a homeland. In the years since, five wars have tested Israel's ability to survive. Influxes of emigrants enhanced the country's cultural riches yet strained its social fabric, even as Israel's Arab neighbors sought to redress their own grievances. After more than 70 years of independence, the nation’s fascinating story is told by renowned historian Martin Gilbert, complete with images of important historical documents.

Scorched Earth
Editor
Fransjohan Pretorius
1st Edition 2001
By the end of 1900 both Boer Republics had virtually been defeated by the British army. Pretoria and Bloemfontein were in British hands. For all practical purposes it seemed as if the Anglo-Boer War was over. The guerrilla tactics of the Boers, however, ensured that this was by no means the case. Lord Kitchener had to proceed quickly and vigorously with the scorched earth policy of his predecessor, Lord Roberts, in order to try and bring about the Boers' surrender - a policy that led to the establishment of the con- centration camps and thereby the deaths of many thousands of innocent civilians: the elderly, women and children, white as well as black.
Kitchener's military goal, to force the Boers to a quick surrender, was not achieved. Kitchener later admitted that the exceptionally high number of deaths in the concentration camps impeded his entire campaign.
Scorched Earth examines the leadership of Roberts and Kitchener and the Boer War concentration camps.
Scorched Earth examines the leadership of Roberts and Kitchener and the Boer War concentration camps. To coincide with Herman Binge's TV documentary of the same name, Professor Fransjohan Pretorius and his team of historians present a gripping and deep-reaching account of the camps which were to have such a divisive effect on the subsequent course of South African history:
By the end of the war there were 34 concentration camps for the Boer elderly, women and children, with a total of 110 000 inhabitants. In addition, there were sixty British camps which held 115 000 black people. There were at least 14 000 deaths in these camps. Altogether 27 927 Boers died in the concentration camps, of which 22 000 were under the age of sixteen..
Scorched Earth outlines the background to these camps and gives a clear picture of life in the camps, authenticated by historical documents. Many of the photographs have not previously been published.
This book is indispensable for understanding the trauma of the camps as well as the lingering bitterness it unleashed among generations of South Africans after the War.

Falling Upward
A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life
by Richard Rohr
1st Edition 2011
In the first half of life, we are naturally and rightly preoccupied with establishing our identity-climbing, , and performingBut those concerns will not serve us as we grow older and begin to embark on a further journeyone that involves challengesmistakes, loss of control, broader horizons, and necessary suffering that actually shocks us out of our prior comfort zone. Eventually, we need to see ourselves in a different and more life-giving wayThis message of "falling down"-- that is in fact moving upward-- is the most resisted and counterintuitive of messages in the world's religionsincluding and most especially Christianity
In Falling Upward, Father Richard Rohr -- the founder of the Center for Action and Contemplation-- offers a new paradigm for understanding one of the most profound of life's mysteries: how our failings can be the foundation for our ongoing spiritual growth. Drawing on the wisdom from time-honored myths, heroic poems, great thinkers, and sacred religious texts, the author explores the two halves of life to show that those who have fallen, failed, or "gone down" are the only ones who understand "up." We grow spiritually more by doing it wrong than by doing it right.
With rare insight, Rohr takes us on a journey to give us an understanding of how the heartbreaks, disappointments, and first loves of life are actually stepping stones to the spiritual joys that the second half of life has in store for us.
FATHER RICHARD ROHR
Fr. Richard Rohr is a Franciscan priest of the New Mexico Province. He founded the Center for Action and Contemplation in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 1986, where he presently serves as Founding Director. Fr. Rohr is the author of more than twenty books, an internationally known speaker, a regular contributing writer for Sojourners and Tikkun magazines, and the CAC's quarterly journal, Radical Grace.

They Shaped Our Century
The Most Influential South Africans of the Twentieth Century
Within the compass of one century South Africa became a union, was involved in two world wars, embraced a socio-political system that earned worldwide condemnation, and finally adopted a democratic system of government with universal franchise. At the same time South Africa progressed to being one of the most highly developed countries in Africa as well as its economic powerhouse.
All this would have been unthinkable without those individuals who achieved prominence in the political, social, economic and scientific sphere; people who took the lead and brought about change, often of a revolutionary nature. At the end of the twentieth century one can safely say that matters would have taken a completely different turn without them - whether in a positive or negative direction.
Who were the 100 most influential South Africans? They Shaped Our Century attempts to answer this vexed question. The book contains highly readable essays on each of them, written by experts, journalists and others people who experienced and shared the lives and deeds of these people, often at close hand.
Can the list be challenged? Certainly! The choice of the top 100 and their rankings will surely elicit disagreement. Still, this unique col- lection of essays offers a fascinating glimpse of those South Africans who irreversibly changed our country and society. It proves a gripping tailpiece to our turbulent century.
Also available in Afrikaans as Hulle Het Ons Eeu Gevorm.
The final selection and ranking of the 100 names were decided on by the public - the list was published on the website News24, where Internet users could vote and nominate additional people.

Jesus Of Nazareth
King Of The Jews
by Paula Fredriksen
1st UK Edition 2000
A Jewish Life and the Emergence of Christianity
Scholarship on the historical Jesus is now in a period of fruitful confusion. The past twenty years have witnessed an explosion of contending interpretations: Jesus as wandering exorcist, Jesus as Cynic sage, Jesus as social revolutionary, Jesus as prophet of the apocalypse.
In this brilliant new book, historian Paula Fredriksen seeks to cut through this fog of conflicting images by focusing resolutely on two indisputable facts: Jesus of Nazareth was crucified by Rome - that is, killed as a political insurrectionist - but none of his immediate followers were harmed or even arrested. If Rome was not concerned about Jesus' political effect on crowds of Jews that Passover, if for some reason Pilate just wanted Jesus dead (the gospels suggest that in killing Jesus Pilate was simply obliging the High Priest) he had many simpler means of achieving that result. The explicitly ugly, public execution, with the criminal charge, heavily ironic, posted at the head of the cross-lesus Nazarenus Rex ludeaorumm, Jesus of Nazareth King of the Jews-implies that Pilate saw Jesus as spearheading some type of dangerous, even seditious, political movement. The public execution aimed specifically to discourage whatever political hopes Jesus may have inspired.Yet the fact that Pilate rounded up and executed none of Jesus' followers suggests that he knew perfectly well that Jesus in fact posed no such threat. So we return to our initial question: why, then, the crucifixion?
Her focus on these two anomalous facts compels Fredriksen to radically re-evaluate the historical worth of traditions in John's gospel that have been discounted or overlooked. Her reconstruction of Jesus' mission and message ends by situating Jesus plausibly in his vibrant, native religious milieu, late Second Temple Judaism; in illuminating the traditions native to this Judaism that account for the Jesus movement's ready embrace of Gentile members; and in accounting why and how the proclamation of Jesus' kingship, the popular response to his mission about the coming Kingdom of God, had the consequences it did both for Jesus himself and for his earliest followers.
