The Art of Maurice Sendak
by Selma G. Lanes
Creator of Where the Wild Things Are, In the Night Kitchen, Higglety Pigglety Pop!, and the illustrations for many other memorable children's books, Maurice Sendak ranks among the best-known, best-loved artists of today. For nearly thirty years, he has spoken to the child-mind in young and adult alike. He is winner of both the Hans Christian Andersen Medal (the highest international honour in the field of children's book illustration) and the Caldecott Medal (awarded annually by the American Library Association).
Sendak's life and work are explored in affectionate detail in this book, which is illustrated with drawings, paintings and photographs, 94 of them in full colour and over 165 in black and white. Selma Lanes, editor and critic of children's books, has drawn upon many conversations with the artist over the last decade as well as three years of formal research and interview for the compilation of this picture biography. Easy and intimate, the text is enhanced by words from Sendak himself, who cooperated fully in the book's preparation.
The illustrations include a full-colour facsimile of the tiny mock-up that Sendak first made for the story that would later become Where the Wild Things Are. In addition, there are three full-colour fold-outs of illustrations from Sendak's books as they have never been seen before.
Here is a unique world of the imagination, from the line drawings of A Hole Is to Dig-Sendak's first major profes- sional assignment-to sketches for his latest picture book fantasy and recent designs for opera sets and animated films. The book also includes a generous selection of Sendak's early sketches and dummies for all his important works-small- scale renderings that trace the meticulous, creative process he undergoes with each book. These provide an insight into the e artist's mind as well as fascinating glimpses of his extraordi- narily varied technique.
This book covers the work-both published and heretofore unpublished-of Sendak's career to date. It is the first major retrospective study of the most important children's book illustrator of our time.

Transvaal Wild Flowers
Paintings by Anita Fabian
Text by Gerrit Germishuizen
1st Edition 1982
In Transvaal Wild Flowers Anita Fabian's paintings present an extensive array of some of the diverse flora of the Transvaal, and are designed to help the wild-flower enthusiast to identify the plants that are most readily to be found in the veld. Representatives from 87 families are illustrated, from the smallest herbs through bulbous plants and shrubs to flowering trees. Some of the plants shown are common, some are rare, and a few are newly discovered species, all accurately portrayed in the exquisite medium of watercolour.
The book covers a great variety of Transvaal wild plants, illustrating more than 700 species of over 400 different genera, grouped on 134 full-colour plates and arranged in standard botanical sequence. An important advantage of the format is that the descriptive text and distribution details for each species fall opposite its illustration, which makes for easy reference. Mr Germishuizen intro- duces each family with a brief description and information on its status in a world context, and the medicinal and herbal uses of the plants are given where these are known. The species' descriptions are concise and simply expressed, and there is a comprehensive glossary for the botanical terms used.
An unusual feature of the text is the inclusion of the derivation of each plant's botanical name, which sometimes honours a botanist or early plant-collector, or relates to a particular characteristic of the plant. This adds interest and definition to the internationally accepted names.
This book is an invaluable source of reference for any nature-lover, a welcome addition to botanical literature and a work of art in its own right.
ANITA FABIAN was born and brought up in the Karoo, where her early interest in plant life was first encouraged by her mother and she began to paint the flowers that she found in the veld. She went on to train at the Michaelis School of Fine Art in Cape Town and was invited to submit work for an international exhibition of botanical illustrations held in South Africa in 1975, and later had a one-man show of her botanical paintings and other work. She and her husband live on the outskirts of Johannesburg in an area of indigenous bush, which provides her with a great deal of the material for her paintings. The Fabians spend all available spare time exploring out-of-the-way places, and it was the discovery of many unusual and intri- guing plants that prompted Mrs Fabian to gather and paint specimens for a book. Transvaal Wild Flowers is the realisation of a project that has taken more than six years to complete.

Numerical Methods In Finance And Economics - Paolo Brandimarte - Second Edition.
A MATLAB - Based Introduction.
A state-of-the-art
introduction to the powerful mathematical and statistical tools used in the
field of finance
The use of mathematical models and numerical
techniques is a practice employed by a growing number of applied mathematicians
working on applications in finance. Reflecting this development, Numerical
Methods in Finance and Economics: A MATLAB?-Based Introduction, Second Edition
bridges the gap between financial theory and computational practice while showing
readers how to utilize MATLAB?--the powerful numerical computing
environment--for financial applications.
The author provides an essential foundation in
finance and numerical analysis in addition to background material for students
from both engineering and economics perspectives. A wide range of topics is
covered, including standard numerical analysis methods, Monte Carlo methods to
simulate systems affected by significant uncertainty, and optimization methods
to find an optimal set of decisions.
Among this book's most outstanding features is the
integration of MATLAB?, which helps students and practitioners solve relevant
problems in finance, such as portfolio management and derivatives pricing. This
tutorial is useful in connecting theory with practice in the application of
classical numerical methods and advanced methods, while illustrating underlying
algorithmic concepts in concrete terms.
Newly featured in the Second Edition:
* In-depth treatment of Monte Carlo methods with
due attention paid to variance reduction strategies
* New appendix on AMPL in order to better
illustrate the optimization models in Chapters 11 and 12
* New chapter on binomial and trinomial lattices
* Additional treatment of partial differential
equations with two space dimensions
* Expanded treatment within the chapter on
financial theory to provide a more thorough background for engineers not
familiar with finance
* New coverage of advanced optimization methods
and applications later in the text
Numerical Methods in Finance and Economics: A
MATLAB?-Based Introduction, Second Edition presents basic treatments and more
specialized literature, and it also uses algebraic languages, such as AMPL, to
connect the pencil-and-paper statement of an optimization model with its
solution by a software library. Offering computational practice in both
financial engineering and economics fields, this book equips practitioners with
the necessary techniques to measure and manage risk.

The Jews Of Ethiopia
A People In Transition
Curator: Natalia Berger
Jewish Museum guest curator: Kay Kaufman Shelemay
The exhibition recounts the fascinating history of the Beta Israel, a Jewish community which, until the beginning of the 20th century, lived in isolation from the rest of world Jewry.
Starting with the different theories and legends related to their origin, the exhibition focuses upon the history, culture and religious life of the Beta Israel. The exhibition traces the changes that occurred as a result of the Beta Israel's contact with world Jewry and concludes with their struggle for recognition by the State of Israel. "Operation Moses (the airlift rescue) and their current absorption into Israeli society.
The catalogue consists of five essays by scholars, accom panied by illustrations outlining the story of the exhibition.
Extensive research was conducted in the preparation of the exhibition, and valuable visual documentary material was gathered. It was impossible to include all this material in the exhibition, but it has greatly enriched the Beth Hatefutsoth Photo Archives.
I gratefully acknowledge the work of Steven Kaplan, who provided important assistance as consultant and historical advisor.
Special thanks are extended to Yona Bogale for his know- ledgeable advice. I am also grateful to Itzhak Grinfeld of the Elias Sourasky Central Library, who helped me through the wealth of material from the Faitlovitch collection. Special thanks to Giuseppe Viterbo who allowed me to use the most precious material in his possession. I am indebted to Doron Bacher for his help during the different stages of my research, and to Danny Amir for preparing the texts for the exhibition and catalogue.

Rembrandt Drawings
Text by Paul Némo
Translated by David Macrae
Rembrandt's drawings can be grouped under three headings, as in this book: family scenes, landscapes and episodes from the Bible.
His preferred models were old men, and, in particular, the poor whose rags were so repugnant to the high society types who came to hi studio to order their portraits. Generally speaking-- and with the exception of his early period of worldly success and vanity-- he was always attracted by ordinary people, as he felt that their character was more starkly and plainly visible than that of anyone else. His drawings concern themselves with human types and expressions rather than with the facile depiction of the picturesque.
It has been observed that he attached no importance at all to a person's rank. A critic writing in 1681 observed: "Instead of taking as his model the Greek Venus, off he went and found a laundry-wench or a peat- digger. The breasts would be flabby, the hands deformed; there might even be the marks of undergarments on her hips and the of a garter on her leg-- but held copy everything."
Rembrandt loved to go walking in the afternoon through the surrounding countryside, often returning home just before dusk. His pupil Hoog- stracten wrote that he once said: "The towns, villages, churches and the thousand riches of creation call out to us, saying: Come, thinker, contemplate us and follow us." There is no doubt that Rembrandt did derive some consolation from nature, the midst of such unrelenting tragedy. Even though he left only fifteen oil paintings of landscapes, he drew large numbers of them, both real and fantastic.
Rembrandt was a profoundly religious man who simply did not feel drawn to the interplay of ideas for their own sake. He was not particularly fond of literature and was in no sense an "intellectual". The truth was what he sought, with his heart and instinct as much as with his reason -- if not more so. And the silence of a church or a temple moved him much more deeply than even the most perfect syllogism. His picture of the Good Samaritan reflects the spirit and mood of the Gospel, a passage of which he used to read every day, except when he chose to read from the Old Testament. Indeed, his works could be used to illustrate almost all of Holy Writ.
However, beyond such sources of inspiration, which were always profoundly human, even the most casual of his sketches bears the unmistakable mark of a great master: their sureness of line and beautiful interplay of light and shade give these drawings a quality which transcends time and place.
