Invalids follow switters, a 35 year old c i a agent on his journey as a wheelchair bound intelligence officer switters experiences love and danger across several continents robbins "explores, challenges, mocks, and celebrates virtually every major aspect of our mercurial era "( quote from the hardcover book jacket )
robbins has stated in numerous interviews that in this book he was trying to deal with contradiction, but rather than avoiding his contradictory nature, his character embraces it he's a c i a agent but despises the government he's a pacifist but carries a gun he's as much in love with his 17 year old stepsister as he is with a 46 year old nun
switters feels that the core of the universe and the basis of human existence is the paradox of light and dark coexisting together one is not separate from the other; they just co exist this is the main idea of " fierce invalids home from hot climates", along with an interest in the lady of fatima and a squawking parrot the title of the novel comes from arthur rimbaud's a season in hell, in which he daydreams about becoming one of "ces féroces infirmes retour des pays chauds "

Desert adventure describes a year long journey, made by wilderness artist paul augustinus, through the rich diversity of desert landscapes of the namib and the kalahari infused with the spirit of adventure, it is an odyssey in search of southern africa's last remnants of unspoiled and untamed wilderness paul's own story is enlivened and given substance by the inclusion of narratives from the explorers of the past, one of whom described travelling in africa as requiring the endurance of a camel and the courage of a lion lavishly illustrated by the author's paintings, photographs, and pencil sketches of animals and birds in their natural settings, as well as by detailed maps, this desert adventure is for all to experience and to treasure '

A History of Combat and Culture spans the globe and the centuries to explore the way ideas shape the conduct of warfare. Drawing its examples from Europe, the Middle East, South Asia, East Asia, and America, John A. Lynn challenges the belief that technology has been the dominant influence on combat from ancient times to the present day. In battle, ideas can be more far more important than bullets or bombs. Clausewitz proclaimed that war is politics, but even more basically, war is culture. The hard reality of armed conflict is formed by -- and, in turn, forms -- a culture's values, assumptions, and expectations about fighting. The author examines the relationship between the real and the ideal, arguing that feedback between the two follows certain discernable paths. Battle rejects the currently fashionable notion of a "Western way of warfare" and replaces it with more nuanced concepts of varied and evolving cultural patterns of combat. After considering history, Lynn finally asks how the knowledge gained might illuminate our understanding of the war on terrorism.
