The Larger Horn: This is likely a Coach Horn or Post Horn. Historically, these were used on mail coaches or horse-drawn carriages to signal the arrival of the post or to warn other road users of the coach's approach. In a hunting context, they were used by the "huntsman" to signal the start of the hunt or to direct the hounds over long distances. The Smaller Horn: This is a standard Fox Hunting Horn. It was designed to be easily carried on horseback (often in a leather case attached to the saddle). Its purpose was to communicate specific commands to the hounds and other riders, such as "Gone Away" when a fox was spotted or "Tally-Ho."Materials: They are constructed with a copper body and brass fittings (the mouthpiece and the bell flare). The red cord on the larger horn is a traditional "lanyard" used for carrying or hanging the instrument.Age and MarkingsThe lack of markings is actually quite common for these items.Unmarked Pieces: Many were produced by small regional metalworkers or as "unbranded" trade items for equestrian shops.Age: These are likely from the early-to-mid 20th century (roughly 1920s–1950s). The construction style—specifically the way the brass ferrules join the copper—is typical of British-style manufacturing from that era. Because they are in "good condition" without significant dents, they have likely been used as decorative "wall hangers" rather than active field instruments for some time.
