MORE FRUSTRATION by Claire BRETECHER Published by Methuen,London1983 Softcover No inscriptions-clean interior
Claire Bretécher, one of the most celebrated French cartoonists of recent decades and the first woman to achieve significant prominence in the genre in France, has died aged 79.
Bretécher rose to fame in the 1970s with the comic-book series Les Frustres, (The Frustrated Ones) which tackled issues of gender and sexuality with a mordant and deadpan humour.
Her most famous character was Agrippine, a spoilt adolescent dealing with the troubles of growing up.
In France, comic books are known as bandes dessinées, or simply BD, and are regarded as a serious literary art form for adults as well as children.
In 1976, philosopher Roland Barthes hailed Bretécher as the “best sociologist of the year”, a term she laughed off at the time.
“She was one of the pioneers of this literary genre and imposed a style, a tone and an offbeat gaze that was of total originality,” her publishers Dargaud said in a statement this week. It said she often tackled social issues well ahead of her contemporaries. “Bretecher traced a path that was unique in the comic book. Her humour and spirit of mind were immense.”

Portrait of Susanna Lunden by Peter Paul RUBENS Vintage Fine Art Print.. in solid wood frame behind glass dimensions approx 39.5 cm 29.5 cm National Gallery London 1622-1625 Baroque period Also known as Le Champeau de Paille Susanna Lunden (1599-1643) was the daughter of Antwerp merchant Daniel Fourment, an old friend and client of Sir Peter Paul Rubens. The sitter's dark, oversized eyes don't meet our gaze, cast in shadow by the rim of her hat. The hat led to the painting acquiring the nickname 'Le Chapeau de Paille' or 'The Straw Hat'. The painting was known by this title long before it was bought by the National Gallery, but how it came to be known by this name is a mystery as the hat is clearly not made of straw. An explanation may be a transcribing error for 'poil' ('felt' in French) in an inventory or catalogue where the painting was listed. This print is colour matched to the original painting and approved by the National Gallery. Every purchase supports the work of the museum.
Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) is the most important artist in the Flemish Baroque tradition. His paintings are full of drama and rich in reference to classical and Christian history. His unique and beloved twist on the Baroque style celebrated movement and colour.
