Incidentally the title Hideous Kinky is derived from a free association word game enjoyed by Lucy and Bea.
Set in 1972, the film follows Julia, a young English mother who, disillusioned with life in London, moves to Morocco with her two young daughters, Lucy and Bea. They navigate a new life in Marrakech, supported by the sale of hand-sewn dolls and occasional money from the girls' absent father. Julia embarks on a journey of self-discovery, exploring Sufism and forming a relationship with a handsome Moroccan acrobat/s t r eet p e r former named Bilal. The film, seen partly through the eyes of the children, portrays their adventures, struggles with finances, and the complexities of their unconventional lifestyle, ultimately leading them back to England.
