Performance hatchback

As an affordable “’Hot Hatch’” the VW Polo GTI certainly ticks all the right boxes, it boasts the high levels of quality and the best residual values. In fact, it incorporates all the good qualities of its larger Golf stablemate, but packaged in a smaller less expensive package.

The 2015 Polo GTI is powered by VW’s 1.8-litre TSi turbocharged four-cylinder engine. It produces 141 Kilowatts and a beefy 250Nm of torque which is already available from as low as 1 250 r/min. Coupled to a six speed DSG transmission, the Polo GTI delivers nippy performance, with the 0-100km/h dash dispatched in 6.7-seconds. Traction was good for a FWD, but there was still signs of some torque steer.

Fuel economy too proved impressive for a little hot hatch at a quoted 5.6-litres per 100km. Ultimately, what is most impressive about this car, is its easy-going nature. Because it pulls strongly from low engine speeds it offers a very relaxed driving experience when you are not in a hurry.

The engine also proved smooth and quiet, while the DSG box offered smooth shifts all round. At full tilt, the DSG box isn’t quite as responsive as you might like, but overall our 2105 model’s engine was in perfect working order and we could not notice any irregularities.

This vehicle exudes high levels of quality for within its class and high residual values. The Polo GTI is most certainly a worthy investment.
