Volvo XC90 D4 Momentum

SUV under R700k

The Volvo brand brings to you the re-incarnation of the Volvo XC90. Under the bonnet you will find a 2-litre turbodiesel powerplant that features Volvo’s latest E-drive technology. This light weight, low friction turbocharged delivers a 140 Kilowatts of power and 400Nm of torque.

Good news for some is the fact that with its latest generation of engines Volvo has been focusing a lot of their efforts on economy and our finalists D4 certainly did not disappoint. Volvo claims a combined fuel index figure of just 5.2-litre/100km which is quite impressive for such a large vehicle weighing close to 2-tons.

Unfortunately, the mass seemed to play a pivotal role in the XC90’s performance and ultimately the car feels as though it needs more punch. Performance figures are therefore not very impressive, especially for a vehicle competing in this price bracket, with a full 9.2 seconds needed to complete the 0-100km/h sprint.

This said the engine did perform admirably well and remained utterly smooth and quiet throughout or short test. For most people there is enough power available for comfortable every day driving. The engine bay also proved to be very tidy indeed, while mechanically this Volvo was as good as new.
