Nissan Qashqai 1.2T Visia
SUV under R325k
Unlike the name, thankfully, the reasons for this small SUV’s growing popularity are not hard to understand. It is well proportioned, well priced, sophisticated and classy. Smooth, considered design lines are complimented by (standard) 17” alloy wheels, giving the car a strong and confident appearance.
Inside, the good news continues. The instrument cluster, dash and centre console are easy on the eye and easy on the brain. The engine feels wonderful and pulls incredibly well for a 4-pot this size. In a head-scratching but grin-inducing show of modern engineering, Nissan manage to draw, with the aid of turbo-charging, 85kw and 190nm from 1200cc. Very impressive indeed. If you could get anywhere near the manufacturers fuel consumption claims of 6.2l/100kms (7-ishl/100km should be doable), you’d be smiling.
The gearbox and clutch feel strong, especially in the first gear position. The suspension also showed (made the noises of) some unexpected wear and tear while on test. But ultimately, this a vehicle worth its weight in gold.
