BMW 330D (A) F30

Luxury sedan under R475k

Rated by many as the pick of the 3-series range, the BMW 330D must be seen as one of the vehicle’s that has turned the market for diesel driven luxury saloons around. Seen first in the 5-series the 3-litre turbo diesel engine has set the standards when performance, refinement and economy was weighed up.

The turbocharged diesel six-cylinder feels both refined and responsive, offering indecent poke for an oil burner. It even sounds good too. In its latest form, you get nothing short of a 190 Kilowatts of maximum power and an earth shattering 560Nm of torque that translates into fast progress that’s ridiculously easy and relaxed.

With such figures, it’s also no surprise that the BMW 330D can out run some serious performance vehicles. The 0-100km/h dash takes just 5.6-seconds and top speed is limited to 250km/h. Impressive too is the exceptionally smooth and quiet characteristics of the diesel mill. The 330D combined fuel economy of 4.9-litres per 100km is still very impressive for a vehicle with such performance credentials. Mechanically, all still seemed perfect.

Like the BMW 320D, the 8-speed gearbox shifts sweetly in default mode, while in sport mode the shifts certainly seem a lot sharper and quite a bit faster too. Fitted with the M-sport package the with 19-inch alloys right through to the standard equipment. Therefore, the ride quality seemed just as firm as the BMW 320D’s, great for handling, but not as forgiving when tackling big speed bumps. Overall comfort was good though especially on the open road. The alloy wheels on the BMW 330D still appeared very tidy.

This is certainly a high-quality saloon that excels with its all-round competence, excellent performance and don’t forget the fuel consumption. Certainly, still one of the best diesel driven saloons money can buy!
