Ask any parent what the most expensive part about having a baby is and we bet the answer is diapers! Hundreds and hundreds of diapers! But there is a new trend over the last few years as parents across the world are going back to the basics with reusable cloth diapers and nappies. These are better for the environment and do not break the bank for these young parents.

Gumtree explains why you should make the switch too:
- Baby skin is five times thinner than adult skin and must be protected. Reusable nappies are delicate on your baby’s skin, avoiding the plastic, adhesives and chemicals that are found in disposable nappies. Parents can now sleep better knowing the incidence of bum rash, allergies and chemical burns are reduced significantly.
- Buying disposable diapers every few weeks is no joke. Reports suggest that a baby goes through 2,700 diapers in their first year alone. Replace these with cloth nappies (that may be more expensive individually) that can be reused over a longer period. And what about the savings? Use it for your baby’s first birthday or school.
- Using reusable diapers reduces your environmental footprint significantly. Thus, there is a huge decrease in the amount of plastic/chemicals going into the landfill - a win-win for everyone!
- Many parents are of the opinion that toilet training has been an easier task with reusable diapers. This is because when babies use the super-absorbing disposable diapers, they do not understand the cues necessary for them to realise that they need to go to the toilet. A reusable diaper, on the other hand, cannot absorb as much and the baby feels the wetness sooner, understanding the need to go to the toilet.
