Sorry Godzilla fans! The new Nissan GT-R won't be sold in SA

Nissan recently unveiled the latest version of their GT-R halo performance car to the world.

Still based on the same chassis from 2007, it features primarily minimal aesthetic upgrades with a slight increase in power. This is the latest in a trio of previous facelifts for the model.

"Fronted with a new grille design, cutting-edge technologies, and craftsmanship, the new models are the pinnacle of the GT-R R35," said Nissan COO Ashwani Gupta at the official launch.

Under the bonnet is still the same twin-turbocharged 3.8-litre V6 engine with outputs of 419kW and 637Nm. The Nismo versions get a power increase to 441kW and 652Nm.

The GT-R was launched locally in 2008, and the assumption was that the new model would make its way to South Africa. Based on the headline, that will not be the case this time.

We contacted Nissan South Africa, and this is what they had to say when asked if the latest version of the GT-R will be sold as a brand-new model locally:

"As part of the Nissan NEXT strategy, Nissan has prioritised the rationalisation of the product portfolio as a key pillar in its new sustainable growth goals. As a result, we can confirm Nissan will not be launching the new GT-R in South Africa. In keeping with our commitment to provide quality aftersales support, owners of the current GT-R model will continue to be supported."

Sorry, Godzilla fans. Even though the new model won't be sold locally, there is still plenty for sale in the pre-owned market. Why not find yourself one on Gumtree by clicking here.
